Hi Jalen, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
I went to Cosmetology school in 2017 in Michigan, my home state, and moved to Raleigh in 2018. I started working at a high-end hair salon in downtown Raleigh and learned that may be something other than my desired journey. When I was looking for a new job, a new Waxing Franchise had just come to NC and was opening a location in late 2018. I interviewed with them and was hired. That location opened in November 2018, and the journey was ongoing. I grew with that franchise for five years, managing, opening new locations, training, etc. In April of 2023, I opened a space to do Gel-X nails at a new salon, continuing to Manage and wax at the franchise. By the end of the year, I had moved my waxing to that same salon, Beauty Village of Raleigh. Opening my space for waxing last year was different than the plan, but I wanted to continue growing within that franchise space. I woke up one Monday morning and wondered why I was growing another person’s business, a man’s business when I could be growing my own. When it hit me that I was doing almost everything but paying the rent, I knew it was time for a new chapter.

Alright, let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
At the end of the day, it’s a journey. Most days are so wonderful and unique, but some days suck. Owning a business is a lot, but I have had some severe practice over the last five years. I am working on growing my business to get more guests at my door.

I am hard on myself and sometimes do not give myself enough credit. I am also really into pop culture, which people probably wouldn’t think.
