Mackenzie Smith

Thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, how did you get started?
I’ve been captivated by the marvels of the human body for as long as I can recall. As a dedicated athlete involved in various sports year-round—soccer, basketball, and track—I encountered numerous injuries, with foot and ankle issues impacting me significantly. This ignited a burgeoning passion to delve deeper into the intricacies of the human foot, an often underappreciated aspect of our anatomy. I’ve served as a chiropractor in the Triangle region for over six years. Following my graduation from Upstate NY (Go Bills!), where I also attended chiropractic school, I swiftly relocated here. I had the invaluable opportunity to work and learn under the guidance of Dr. Lindsay Mumma at Triangle Chiropractic & Rehab in North Raleigh. Under her mentorship, I flourished both personally and professionally. In September 2023, I leaped and acquired my chiropractic practice in Cary—an exhilarating and rewarding decision. Entrepreneurship has been a lifelong aspiration of mine since I grasped its meaning in fourth grade. To now shoulder the dual responsibilities of a healthcare provider and a business owner is an immense privilege, allowing me to challenge myself in ways I’ve always desired continuously.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
If any aspect of one’s life feels too smooth, it’s a cue to reflect on the need for more significant challenges. Growth is born from overcoming obstacles; I’ve certainly experienced my share. Transitioning to solo entrepreneurship was a monumental shift, especially after being part of a close-knit community in the previous practice. My ultimate aspiration is to foster that same supportive environment at CFC, but I recognize the journey ahead is lengthy and, though rewarding, at times, it can be isolating. I am deeply thankful for the support I receive, both near and far, yet many of these challenges I must navigate alone. The beauty lies in discovering solutions—a truly empowering experience once achieved.

Let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
The name “Core Foundations Chiropractic” reflects my commitment to patient-centered care with a strong emphasis on the core—a concept with multiple layers of significance. As a practitioner focusing on rehabilitation, I integrate exercises into all patient care plans to enhance treatment outcomes. The core of the body is a pivotal area often discussed, but I view it through a unique lens in my rehabilitative approach. While crucial, traditional cues around the core can sometimes evoke negative responses instead of positive ones. At CFC, we not only prioritize this core area but also emphasize another core that is frequently overlooked—the foot. Additionally, we underline nutrition significantly because optimizing mobility and stability alone isn’t enough if our bodies aren’t properly fueled. Adequate nutritional support facilitates meaningful and lasting changes in our patient’s health and wellness.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
I was the kid known for being too loud and frequently speaking out of turn. My upbeat nature found joy in almost every aspect of life, and I constantly felt the urge to be in motion—sitting still was a real challenge for me. Alongside my exuberance, I was also quite challenging myself, whether in sports, academics, or any other endeavor I pursued. Negative self-reflection has been something I have had to work very hard to change my perception of.
