Today we’d like to introduce you to Dylan Wishon
Hi Dylan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I got my first guitar when I was around 16 and started teaching myself how to play with some free YouTube tutorials (Marty Schwartz for all the guitar players out there). Around the same time I was very into hip-hop, and started learning how to make beats on a program called FL Studio. After about a year long stint of making beats and goofy sounding rap songs, I started to transition more into indie/singer songwriter territory, mostly just getting familiar with how to record, mix, etc. Gradually through a lot of trial and error, and countless musical influences, I ended up releasing 2 projects in 2022 and 2023, as well as my personal favorite project in 2024, Bedroom Division (Self Titled). I also began attending GTCC in 2023, in the Entertainment Technology program, this was where I met my band, who I started playing shows with in May 2023.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As someone who works and studies full time, finding time to fully commit to the artistic process is difficult, sometimes art has to take a backseat to keep up with bills, school work, and just life in general.
I think that another struggle for me personally as an artist, is meeting my own expectations. I’ve always found it very hard to fully “finish” a project or song, it takes conscious effort to get past that self doubt and share your music with the world.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m primarily a musician, songwriter and producer. An aspect of my music that I’m proud of, is that all of my music thus far has been entirely written, recorded, produced, performed, and mix/mastered by myself (excluding one song, lol) My style of genre and production is also something unique in the NC area,
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
As I started my artistic journey by myself, I always had an aversion to asking others for help, opting to just do everything on my own, including things like photos, video, marketing, performances, etc. This past year I’ve started to make more friends that are talented in their own fields, and I’ve started to reach out more for help when it comes to all things other than music, helping out them by giving them more work, and making my own content that much better by having their skills and talent involved. Don’t be afraid to ask for help.
