Meet Natalie Papier

Today, we’d like to introduce you to Natalie Papier.

Natalie Papier

Hi Natalie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My career path into interior design started rather organically, really! My background was always in art, and when we purchased our home in Oak Park, IL, the home became my newest canvas.

Experimenting with paint, art, and thrifting transformed our home into what would become an evolution of my interior style. It started getting the attention of friends who would ask for my help with their own homes, and then a friend of a friend asked if I would consider helping her. It snowballed and became a full blown business before I even had a clue on how to run one…

It was through Instagram, though, that I really found the larger design community and so many other creatives. So many incredible opportunities have come from putting my work out there and connecting with talented people and companies.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
While I would really like to say it was smooth sailing, that is not true. You learn alot along the way about finding your voice and staying authentic to your style and who you are along the way. Trying to figure out what to charge, what your process should look like, how to balance business and life, what projects to take on, and trying new things is a bumpy journey.

You learn a lot along the way and adjust accordingly. But the most difficult challenges were the ones that taught me the most. There isn’t an easy route to a successful business, and it’s hard not to compare yourself to others. But staying true to yourself always helps you to go the right path.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe you can tell us more about your work next?
My design firm, Home Ec., is most known for its eclectic style, combining my love of interiors, colors, and vintage with art. Starting with the art in my designs is a concept that defines my brand. It’s taking that love of art and collaborating with other artists to create a unique, personal approach to design.

I’m most proud that this concept has led to opportunities on TV (Artfully Designed on Magnolia Network, available to stream on Max), a book (Start with the Art out Oct. 29th, 2024), and into product lines (Home Ec. collection with Mitchell Black wallpaper and a lighting line with Mitzi) as well as in my residential and commercial work.

Do you have any advice for those just starting?
To ask for help! There are so many experts in their industries out there who are willing to answer a few questions, give you a tip or two, and learn something from you!

Create your community. It’s not only important in business but in life. If you’re staying true to yourself, then there is no competition. There is space for us all.
