Exploring Life & Business with Lauren Kunijo of Kenna Kunijo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Kunijo.

Lauren Kunijo

Hi Lauren , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
It has been quite a journey. I began my 20s at Florida state university. Though I did well while I was there I always knew I would end up in a creative field. I attended Paul Mitchell the school Orlando and shortly after graduating began working in a salon dedicated to the Paul Mitchell system. After almost a year, I decided I wanted to be closer to family and moved to charlotte. I continued my career in hair in south charlotte till I outgrew my salon and decided to create my own salon space. My desire for my own space was grown from no more than the desire to be able to do hair while also being involved in my community in a charitable level. I loved enhancing the day of my clients while in my chair but felt the draw to enhance the lives of those less fortunate in whatever way I could.
While in my salon suite I met my now business partner kenna Ehman. Her devotion to charity and giving back matched my heart as well and some time later we decided to combine forces and grow a salon that had more reach than us alone. Today we have been open for 6 years and are grateful for each year!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not ! When beginning as the single person in charge and single decision maker; learning to lead and allow those in their positions to flourish was a challenge at first. I was so used to doing all roles it was a struggle releasing control at first. So grateful I did because the team is amazing and we wouldn’t have the success we do without those monumental people and roles.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Kenna Kunijo is a charlotte based salon where it’s “about more than just great hair.” We have raised the bar on industry standards for ourselves and hopefully others. We have a 2 year assistant program that when our assistants graduate; gives them the opportunity to begin at a level they would not reach for probably 4-5 years having gone without. We pride ourselves in continuous education and the challenge to consistently grow in our craft.
Additionally, we are constantly involved in the community with events, and giving back. Proceeds from products every Friday are donated to a local, black/indigenous and/or woman owned non profit or charity. We also support a house of peoples with Hope For Justice in aid of rescuing, sex, trafficked men and women.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
We love to collaborate and support other small businesses. If you were ever interested in a collaboration or wanting to support a charity, we support please reach out to us at [email protected]
