Rising Stars: Meet KaShawna Alexander

Today we’d like to introduce you to KaShawna Alexander.

KaShawna Alexander

Hi KaShawna, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, you could tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey in fashion began at the age of six. I discovered the show Project Runway, and it peaked my interest into fashion & the behind-the-scenes process. Shortly following that discovery, my aunt Shirley taught me how to use a sewing machine and gifted me with my very first sewing machine. From that day forward, I worked on small and big projects. Varying from pillowcases to everyday clothes. It wasn’t until high school that I decided to turn my therapeutic hobby into a profitable venture. I was grateful enough to be supported and encouraged by my peers, and that only fueled my pursuit of business and fashion. The support and encouragement from my community have been a driving force in my journey. After graduating high school, I attended SCAD before transferring to North Carolina A&T to obtain my bachelor’s in Fashion Merchandising and Design. Through my degree and my community, I have been able to explore amazing opportunities and better my business in the process! I often find myself going viral and receiving lots of engagement and support through the sharing of my creative projects on social media that combine my love of fashion as well as packaging design! There’s absolutely nothing I love more than creating.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story. Has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what challenges have you had to overcome?
The journey has been long but nothing short of rewarding. One of the many great joys of being an Entrepreneur and a Creative is the trial and error process. My favorite piece of advice is ‘trust the process.’ That goes for every area of life imaginable. As a woman of faith, I trust the path that God has put me on. I constantly remind myself that faith without works is dead. So, to achieve the things that you deem desirable, you must put in the work and be consistent. Perfection and success are two things that cannot be rushed. No matter what! Deciding to rebrand my business at the beginning of 2024 was one of the most challenging things I have had to overcome. I had put my business on hold for over a year and was returning to the swing. But I had decided that I wanted to do things right this go around and do them my way. I was very hesitant about how the rebrand would be received & how the changes would impact my community and support. Yet, to my surprise, I discovered I had nothing to worry about. My rebrand was received well and has made me even more enthusiastic about all the new ideas and projects I have to share!

I appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
In short, I have made my mark as a creative through developing beautiful pieces in fashion, as well as packaging design! What sets my brand apart is my unique approach to fabrics and concepts. I take great pride in exploring different inspirations to curate one-of-a-kind experiences for my beautiful customers! This includes fabric prints/patterns that I have designed myself, as well as packaging/collection concepts that I have detailed from beginning to end. I am proud of the growth and support that my brand has acquired over the years. And even more grateful for the love received now! I take great pride in being a one-woman show. And I’ll always go hard for the brand that I love and built from the ground up.

We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Can you share something that might surprise us?
People are often surprised by how long I have been a lover of fashion. When they discover that I have been sewing since I was around six, they are very impressed. Often times when I am out sourcing, I will run into older women and they will also express their fascination with my pursuit of the craft. It is considered a lost art to many, but it is one that I have grown to love and cannot live without. My long-standing passion for fashion and sewing is a testament to the power of perseverance and dedication, and I hope it inspires others to follow their dreams.
