Hidden Gems: Meet Mary Luz Olmos of Mary Luz Makeup Artistry

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary Luz Olmos

Hi Mary Luz, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born and raised in North Carolina, my parents are originally from Zacatecas, Mexico. I started my first business at age seventeen cleaning homes and I started at age nineteen doing makeup and hair for family and friends. I cleaned homes for twenty years. I truly did not understand my passion for makeup until my late twenties. I would do collaborations with different photographers, as well with other makeup artists. Which I would travel about an hour away to do these collaborations for no paid but all I wanted was to get my artistry known. I also did some freelance work with different makeup companies in the Raleigh areas for a few years. By the time I was in my thirties, I no longer cleaned homes but started working for the school system as a receptionist which lasted for six years. However during this time I had the pleasure to work with some wonderful mentors and coworkers on set production work for commercial, television, I love it. I have had the pleasure to have worked for lots of wedding, fashion shows, quinces, photo session for headshots, corporate headshots. boudoir session, commercials, documentaries, live shows, video clips, summits, interviews and short films. I also do special effect makeup SFX, cuts, burns, bruises, older age makeup for film and short film. I did not know this was my passion until I started working on set doing production work. I have had the pleasure to do makeup and hair for many women and men for 10 years. I love my profession. Mary Luz Makeup Artistry is a beauty service company that offers makeup and hair for any occasion. We are looking forward to offering more beauty services in a future and keep our customers happy during their stress free environment while being pampered.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was not a smooth road, working for free almost four years with no travel fee. I would travel often to Fayetteville to do collaboration with different photographers to get my business name out there. I also had to learn the hard way how to manage a business in all aspects. I also would cut my prices down to get a client to book or do some free services for recommendation by their word but unfortunately never got clients from those clients. However all those experiences have made me the business person, I am today. I have worked hard to get where I am. Therefore the Media Makeup is no easy road, it took lots of patience and hard work to be able to work on set production. I had to shadowed a coworker/ mentor and had to work for free to learn from the best for a year. But I was able to overcome these challenges and I love being on set and I have had the pleasure to work with some amazing people on set.
