Today we’d like to introduce you to Harry Stewart
Hi Harry, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I grew up on St. Mary’s Street in Raleigh and knew from a young age that I was going to be a painter. At Broughton High School I was fortunate to study under one of the great teachers in Raleigh at the time (1963-1965) Alice Ehrlich. After high school I attended Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, MD and received a BFA in 1969. I have painted thousands of paintings since that time. Most of my subject matter is related to my love of the water. My childhood and part of my young adulthood was spent on the Pamlico River. I worked as a waterman on the Pamlico fishing crabs and eels. In 1982, I attended Chapman School of Seamanship and received my coast guard certifications. I continued to work on the water in Morehead City and later in Wilmington, NC. All of these experiences influenced my subject matter and gave me an intimate feel and deep knowledge of NC boats and all kinds aspects of being in, on, and near the water. My other activities have include surf fishing and playing guitar. Now at age 79, I have a studio located on Wake Forest Road where I paint daily. I have recently had a show at Ursipany Gallery on Falls of the Neuse Road and have paintings currently hanging there.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have had to do many other activities to support myself along the way since selling art for a living is quite challenging. I have worked as a house painter, home renovator, fish monger, fisherman and a number of other unrelated jobs. I also have played music with many Raleigh players such as Leroy Savage and friends and now play with H3O with Pud and Charles Hassell.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
You will have to see my paintings and judge for yourself. I think what sets me apart is not only the volume of my work but the fact that I have been painting over 70 years
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
