Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Lynch.
Hi Steven, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
in 2004 i wrote my first rhyme on paper in my sixth grade class in wilson county north carolina. I had no rap name yet. One of my friends at the time asked me to join in on a freestyle session they had going during free time in 2005. Then someone i knew told a random guy at my school i didn’t have classes with he couldn’t out rhyme me. The rap battle was set up the next day after lunch in the hallway. We were walking back to class freestyling. I loss my first batlle. The next day i showed up better prepared and beat him in the battle. It was like 30 people jammed packed in that little restroom. We had a science class and we had lab coats and goggles on. Rez said “Scuba Steve!!” in reference to adam sandler movie big daddy character. so i changed how i spelled my name from scuba to Scooba. Basically Snoop Dogg was hot at the time and one of my inspirations till this day name how he spelled his name is how i wrote mines down. I didn’t start recording music until 2015. I Recorded a lot of my tracks at my cousin house 2016-2020 under a different name. I returned under the scooba steve nc name and put all my current tracks on all streaming services. I also paid for small ads since 2022 to see who liked my music the most in different cities and states across social media. I went through being homeless past 5 years with family issues and problems with keeping a job. I stayed grinding recording in the best studios in nc like Maximous Studios in charlotte nc. I still write raps now but i do not battle rap anymore. I never gave up no matter my living situation or relationships with people. I have a new song coming out called ON Cap! featuring Raleigh NC legend Real Dynamite.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Between friends and fake love and hate it has not been easy. without the internet i would have not been able to get the instrumentals or features to my songs this fast. I have worked with big name producers like CapNCrunch Beats,DJYOUNGKASH,Billionaire Boyscout and Origami Beats. The real problem is paying for studio sessions, ads, artwork, instrumentals, features and clothes all out of my own pocket. I also had to buy my own equipment to film and edit my first music video. Buying a logo is one of the other main issues i had aswell. You have to be on reddit and instagram or pinterest to find a illustrator that creates art. The main thing that made it hard at first is the lack of resources in hip hop in raleigh. it is barely any one that believe you can make it successfully independently. They think a major label is the only way and that is a false narrative.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
What set me apart from others is i rap about anime, mixed martial arts, video games, movies and my personal life all blended in one. most people just rap about violent crimes or drugs they take. I have always been different with my approach. I like to message illustrators on how i would like my song and album covers to look aswell. That makes my music stand out off the rip.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
Shout Out to Ronin Marz from Maryland. He is a lyricist who won a contest Montana of 300(chicago Rapper) hosted on Instagram. I found him thru a repost Arsonal The Rebel(Battle Rap Superstar) reposted one of his freestyles. Can’t be feat ronin marz on all streaming services now. Also Shout Out Sir Michael Rocks i have a song with him otw. I also want to shout out my brothers from another HaremBoi and KoreyRaiJack from michigan/ohio. They have told people about my music several times and had my back when a lot of other people left me out to dry. Also My cousin helped direct and edit my music video Yong Soul. Shouts Out to Wiz Khalifa. when he was vlogging from 2008-2010 in his early day2days that gave me inspiration to want to vlog and record music to what i like and not what others think i should be recording.
