Life & Work with Robert Lyons of Durham Nc

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Lyons

Hi Robert, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Robert (Rob), I am native of Durham NC (Bull City). I Graduated from North Carolina Central University where I studied Criminal Justice, and from there my love for photography grew.

What got me started into photographer was Hip Hop, cultural and travel magazines. I was always fascinated with the images including in these. The idea of traveling and taking photos of different sceneries was always appealing to me. I always would find myself snapping photos via phone of eye catching moments.

While in college I encountered a forensic photography class which help spark my interest further into the details of photography not just pointing and shooting but by providing a more technical aspect into the art. It taught me how to use the camera properly with emphasis on the importance of light manipulation, shutter control and the benefits when producing quality photos.

Right before pandemic, I had an opportunity to travel to Costa Rica and Italy; I was able to capture the beautiful scenery of both countries via phone and when I returned home I decided to invest in a camera and some supporting equipment. I enjoyed exploring different countries and cities admiring the architect. This is how I fell in love with street photography.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
One of the biggest challenges I have faced is learning how to directing clients on the vision. Funny enough I would practice some posing so it could be easily communicated during shoots also it helps provides some humor and encouragement to the clients when they see me attempting these poses. I am good at shooting a great photo but when it comes to directing the client in the intended poses this it where the challenge begins. But I look at it as a learning experience and I enjoy finding ways or solutions to help support a more interactive experience for clients. Understanding that if the client is comfortable this will help with producing quality photograph.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specializes in Portraits, Scenic and Street photography. I enjoy providing mirror like images of my client, that provides excessive detail and depth. Also I enjoy creating stories within the photos. I’m proudful of creating memories for my clients, being able to see my work displayed throughout social media and portfolios. I think what sets me apart is the lasting bonds I build with my clients, being able to make them feel comfortable and relax in order to produce great photos; also my attention to detail, some would call it they “EYE” being able to discovery photogenic moments in unphotogenic places.
