Hi Kyndall, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2018, while I was attending East Carolina University, I worked as a spa attendant at a beauty salon. My responsibilities included cleaning, handling laundry, and prepping guests for treatments. The salon offered a variety of services, including spray tanning, and I was given the opportunity to learn this skill for additional income. As a college student, I was eager to take on the extra work.

Through my training, I discovered a deep appreciation for spray tanning. I found the process not only calming and satisfying but also akin to an art form. The precision and care involved in applying the tan, combined with the opportunity to enhance someone’s appearance, truly resonated with me. It’s a skill that requires a delicate balance of technique and creativity, much like painting. Each client is like a unique canvas, with their individual needs and characteristics. The spray tan solution is similar to paint, which can be customized with additives such as scents, bronzing drops, or shimmer to achieve the ideal shade. The spray tan machine acts as the brush, applying the color with precision to enhance the client’s appearance. This experience helped me realize my passion for combining artistry with practical skills, and I’ve continued to pursue this interest since then.

After graduating from East Carolina University with a major in Psychology and a minor in Human Development and Family Science, I shifted my focus to work more aligned with my degree. My initial passion was helping others, especially children, and I found great fulfillment in working with children with Autism and Intellectual Development Disorder (IDD). I’ve held various childcare roles and am currently employed as a therapist at a youth behavioral health hospital.

Despite my commitment to this field, I continued to nurture my passion for spray tanning as a hobby. The joy I experienced working in the beauty industry never faded, and in 2022, I faced a pivotal decision. I wanted to pursue both my career in mental health and my love for spray tanning without having to choose one over the other.

To achieve this, I decided to create my own business. I launched a mobile tanning service to cater to clients in my city and the surrounding areas. This venture allows me to integrate my entrepreneurial spirit with my passion for beauty, creating a balance between my professional career and personal interests. It’s been incredibly rewarding to build something of my own while continuing to make a positive impact in both fields.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey with my business has been what I would describe as a smooth road with plenty of hills—definitely not bumpy, but full of ups and downs. I cherish the flexibility that comes with owning my own business. However, being a one-woman show has its challenges. I wear many hats: I’m the owner, artist, social media manager, and cleaner, among other roles. Balancing all these responsibilities while striving for growth can be demanding, but it’s also incredibly rewarding to see the positive impact I can make through my work.

One of the biggest struggles has been expanding my reach and connecting with more women in the community. Sharing my business with as many people as possible has been both surprisingly easy and exceptionally challenging. While it’s straightforward to spread the word through various social media platforms and word-of-mouth, the real challenge lies in reaching the right audience—those who truly resonate with what I offer. It’s about finding and connecting with the people who will benefit most from my services. I’m continually seeking to identify and engage with my ideal clients, ensuring that my message reaches those who will appreciate it the most.

My goal is for clients to view spray tanning as a valuable part of their self-care routine, similar to appointments for hair, nails, facials, or massages. You don’t need a special occasion to enjoy a spray tan. Whether it’s a teacher preparing for the first day back to school, a nurse looking to add a touch of color to brighten up their scrubs, or a corporate professional who spends most of their time in an office, getting a tan can be a simple yet meaningful way to take care of oneself. Embracing spray tanning as a regular self-care practice highlights the importance of prioritizing personal well-being, regardless of the occasion.

How do you think about luck?
Growing up, I always found joy in arts and crafts—coloring and painting were particularly calming for me, though drawing wasn’t my strongest suit. When I started learning spray tanning, I realized how closely it aligns with these creative activities. I felt lucky in the fact that because I enjoyed the arts I was able to grasp the concept of spray tanning and exceed very well, very quickly.

Although I didn’t initially have a strong grasp of the business side of things, my passion for building something meaningful has driven me to continuously learn and grow. I’ve been dedicated to deepening my understanding of business concepts and exploring new strategies to enhance my brand. This commitment to learning and adapting has been essential in turning my vision into a successful reality
