Inspiring Conversations with Leah Horton of The Human Collection LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Leah Horton

Hi Leah, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina, surrounded by nature, and my early years were shaped by the influence of my family, who have deep roots in the area. From a young age, I was fascinated by anatomy and physiology, which I explored through art. My father and mother, scientists, inspired this curiosity, and I found ways to translate my interest in the human body and mind into my creative work.

Despite facing challenges with neurodivergence and criticism both academically and artistically, I was determined to pursue my passion. My experiences traveling the world during my youth also shaped my worldview, fueling a desire for freedom and exploration that later led me to study fashion design and textiles at Parsons in New York. Even in the city, I held onto my love of nature, something that began in childhood when I spent hours in the garden, finding beauty in flowers.

Today, I combine these influences in my work, blending my love for fine art and textiles. The fluidity of working with watercolors and creating vibrant textiles has become an essential part of my process. I continue to push my creative boundaries and explore the intricate relationships between the mind, creativity, and the world around me.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many artists, I’ve faced my share of struggles, both internal and external. One of the biggest challenges has been navigating neurodivergence. Early on, it was difficult to manage the expectations of traditional academic environments, and I often felt misunderstood or criticized for thinking and working differently.

Another significant struggle was being the only brown face in predominantly white spaces. I had to prove my competence and intelligence, particularly to my male counterparts, which sometimes felt exhausting. Trying to voice my ideas and being overlooked was frustrating, but I’m fortunate to have a strong support system. They constantly cheer me on, advocate for my work, and bring it to the table when others won’t.

I’ve also encountered criticism in the art world, where my ideas didn’t always fit conventional molds. Overcoming that pressure to conform and to stay true to my vision was tough, but ultimately it fueled my growth as an artist. I had to trust my instincts and push through the noise.

These struggles have shaped who I am as an artist, giving my work depth and resilience. They’ve been essential to my evolution, and I’ve come to embrace them as part of my journey.

We’ve been impressed with The Human Collection LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At The Human Collection, we specialize in creating art that transcends traditional boundaries and transforms spaces into healing atmospheres. My work is centered on the belief that fabric prints, colors, and patterns have a unique ability to uplift mental well-being.
