Today we’d like to introduce you to Megan Crist
Hi Megan, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Sure. When I was right out of college, I was a freelance editorial photographer and I shot mainly environmental portraits and music photojournalism. Now I shoot primarily commercial food photography. It’s not exactly a linear path; I’ve been a photographer and creative for most of my life, really. So professionally, I’ve been fortunate to have opportunities that allow me to look at projects from a variety of angles in the creative field: photography, styling, graphic design, art direction, editing, and so on. In the beginning of my adult life I felt a little scattered to be doing all these different jobs, but at this point in my career, I can see that I did the right thing for myself because everything really came together to shape the distinct perspective that I have now.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
So, like I said it wasn’t linear. There was a lot of winding here and winding there. And if you’re anything like me, when you’re in the midst of weaving all of your seemingly random jobs together, it’s really hard to get anyone to see the value in that variety when you’re trying to move up. It might not like be like this for everyone, but for me, there was a lot of resistance that came into play around the idea of not having a specific focus (NPI). So I knew I had to work on refining the my portfolio. I spent some time going through my work and getting feedback from other creative directors, making changes, lather rinse repeat… And I finally got to a noticeable point where there was clarity to my presentation, for my market.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I mainly shoot food. I would say that defining characteristics of my work are lived-in styling, lots of texture, and bold treatment of color. I’m very intentional, but with a natural touch. Even though I mostly make pictures in studio, I know my photojournalism experience is influencing my drive to make images that feel alive.
As far as my career goes, I’ve had a handful of what would be considered very exciting experiences, but mostly I’m just proud of being able to do creative visual work for a living. I love being able to support other businesses of all sizes who appreciate what I do. And I’m so thankful to my clients, past, present, and future.
