Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamette Farrington
Tamette, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My entrepreneurial journey started and continues as a faith walk. I was inspired to step into entrepreneurship while working my full-time job at a university, where I was charged with creating a Center for Student Success. In that role, I first assessed what the students wanted in the Center and provided options. Entrepreneurship took the lead. I then scheduled local entrepreneurs to be available, at the same place, on the same day, and same time to come out and provide consultation services for FREE to entrepreneurs, this included students, staff, faculty, and community members. It was an inspiration to witness the transformation of entrepreneurs. As my knowledge grew, I was so inspired and motivated, that this led me to (blindly) start my own business; walking out on faith. I wanted to be a business owner but had no clue what I would sell. I didn’t have a product and I didn’t know what service I would offer because like most entrepreneurs I was good at so many things. At first, I was looking at being an educational consultant since I worked in higher ed for over 10 years and I knew the ends and outs of the higher ed space. I knew I had to start somewhere. Starting the journey led me to find my life purpose in coaching; working with other entrepreneurs to help them stop wasting time and be intentional and strategic while holding them accountable.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
My obstacles and challenges consisted of a bumpy smooth road with twists and turns that will cause you to step away from the navigation system and just trust the good Lord and drive! My first struggle, I will humbly admit is that I’m good at so many things, so what do I focus on? The solution, focus on what actually pays, allows you to work less and helps more people. My second struggle, I work full-time. When do I take the employee hat off and put the employer hat on? When do I take the employer hat off and put the employee hat on? Usually, the right hat was not on at the right time. Through trial and error, I’ve learned when to wear what. Third, I needed a team. I had to realize the value of community. Oh the places you can go with a team, you can not be successful and do it all on your own. Nobody goes far by themselves. I’m thankful for the struggles because I have been able to learn quite a bit. Things such as true wealth is not always monetary and everything that is good is not always great for you. Just because there is an opportunity doesn’t always mean you should take it. I now make decisions that fall into alignment. I often ask myself, is the opportunity aligned with what I value and what is important in my life? I’m a single mother and my children’s father is incarcerated so although good opportunities have presented themselves there are times when I had to decline because of the things I value. One of those being, quality time with my kids. It’s not always easy but once it is identified (what is important to you), struggles can appear less like struggles because you know you are in alignment with your values.
As you know, we’re big fans of T’Farri Solutions. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My brand takes pride in providing clarity to the visionary. You have someone by your side who listens, makes you feel heard, and helps you to achieve rich and rewarding life experiences where you finally feel fulfilled in all that you do. T’Farri Solutions specializes in supporting the wellness of entrepreneurs through holistic coaching, curated events, and workshop facilitation. As the owner, I truly enjoy working with startup entrepreneurs, serving as a Shepard of the Extraordinary. Connecting them to events such as R.O.O.T.s (Realizing Our Opportunities Together) an annual networking event and Fall Forward with Entrepreneurship a 4-week mindset workshop that focuses on working with those who are justice-involved and those in higher education. Too often we talk about systemic barriers, most recently I piloted a systemic pipeline that included opportunities to build entrepreneur connections through networking, mindset shifting, and practical business application. I love to work collaboratively to elevate local entrepreneurs.
Along with coaching, I enjoy providing my clients and the community with educational opportunities in personal/business financial literacy and grant writing. I am happy to share that I have secured over $30,000 in grants for multiple businesses. Some of my clients are entrepreneurs who work full-time and struggle with focus, time management, fear and juggling the responsibilities of major life events in their personal lives such as job promotion, being a new parent, retirement, etc. I take where they are currently, where they want to be and tackle everything in between.
I am the connector also known as the “plug”, resourceful, witty, and empathetic, I am here at your service.
Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Forget a mentor, find a sponsor. Identify someone who is willing to invest their time, wisdom and money into you. In order to find someone willing to do this you have to truly believe in the work that you do. You must have enthusiasm, be eager to learn and be ambitious in applying what you have learned. You also must show up for others if you want them to show up for you. First identify how you can be of service to someone else, for free! That’s right, how can you support the vision and goals of someone else? You want to find a sponsor/mentor whose character you admire. See how they treat others from clients, colleagues and even the homeless begging for change. This is a spiritual journey, you want to align with those who elevate and operate with purpose on purpose.
