Community Highlights: Meet Dr. Jeffrey Scales of The North Carolina Center for Dermatology

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. Jeffrey Scales

Hi Dr. Jeffrey, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As a young child, I can recall watching my mother go back and forth to work where she was a nurse.

She worked at Howard University Hospital. It was a very prestigious position and I felt very proud of her.

As time went on, I decided that I wanted to enter medicine as well. Medicine has always intrigued me because of the scientific aspects of things.

It is also a great way to serve people. After graduating from Morehouse College, I entered into medical school at the University of Pennsylvania.

I completed my residency in pediatrics and eventually in dermatology. After which, I opened my own private practice here in Durham, North Carolina. I have been in practice nearly 29 years.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Completing medical school and opening a private practice were quite challenging.

I entered into small business for the first time. There were no manuals to help me figure out how to proceed.

Initially, I made a number of basic mistakes. With time, I have pushed forward.

Learning business skills has been a challenge.

Additional challenges include managing people and maintaining my clinical skills.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about The North Carolina Center for Dermatology?
I currently work in private practice as a general dermatologist with some specialization in cosmetics.

I am known through the area as being someone who treats a wide range of diseases as well as a diverse patient population.

I am most proud of the fact that we take care of many of the unfortunate citizens who do not have insurance and are often associated with medicaid and medicare.

This is an item that separates us from many of the private practice dermatologists in the area.

How do you think about happiness?
The things that make me most happy in life are those things that contribute to the improvement in people and society.

I really enjoy helping people to feel better in my chosen field.

Nothing is more rewarding than helping a person who is suffering to feel better.

Additional things that make me happy include my family, my friends, my time on the golf course and personal fitness.

I am a big fan of spectator sports including college and pro football as well as college and pro basketball.
