Today we’d like to introduce you to Adrian Johnson

Hi Adrian, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Simply Battered Bakery is a 100% online business that specializes in sweet treats for all occasions. I began this business about a year ago and it has been quite successful ever since. As a child, I remember being in the kitchen with my mom and baking cupcakes, cakes, and other sweet treats. We had so much fun and created so many delicious treats. As I started to get older, my schedule began to fill up and I was not able to be with my mom in the kitchen as much. I have always had a love for baking and I missed that. I thought about opening a business for a long time, but I am a college student at East Carolina University, the Vice President of the Magnolia Belles, and I work as a wedding planner. The life of this businesswoman never stops. I eventually told myself that I just did not have time to do all of the things that needed to be done to be able to handle a business. Early last year, I attended an event at Carolina Home and Garden in Beaufort North Carolina with Jett Weddings. At this, event we were promoting to brides and their families and I decided that some cupcakes for this event would be perfect since it is wedding-centered. People began to come to the booth and take cupcakes, then they would come back for more. Within just a few hours, all of the cupcakes were gone and I had tons of people asking me about my treats. After this day, I finally decided that I was going to open Simply Battered. I then had my business up and running within about 2-3 weeks!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have for sure been some struggles along the way. I have had to endure long nights of working on cakes, long days at markets, etc. This type of career is a lot on your body. I have had to learn how to treat my body properly and kindly when I am baking because sometimes I just get so caught up in the art of decorating that I will look up and hours have gone by. The art of decorating and baking takes over me and I have to reign myself in to make sure I will not over-exhaust myself.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in wedding treats. I am a preferred vendor for Carolina Wedding Partners which is located in Beaufort, so a lot of my work is done down there for weddings. I am also able to do cakes for all other occasions, but weddings are my favorite. I will say that I am more known for decadent cupcakes. I love creating different cupcake flavor combinations! Most of the time you can find me at markets in Wake Forest selling all types of cupcakes!

How do you think about luck?
I do not think that luck has had any part in this process. I have made sure to work very hard to get my business to where I want it to be. I have looked over every detail and every aspect to make sure that I am doing what I need to do as a responsible business owner. I believe that luck can only take me so far and then it is up to me to make the effort to continue to make the business successful!
