Meet Damiyah Murphy of Zebulon, North Carolina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Damiyah Murphy

Hi Damiyah, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I began my journey in my hometown of Baltimore, Maryland. While I love my city, I always knew it wasn’t where I wanted to settle long-term. At the time, I was working as a server, but I hated my job and craved something more fulfilling. My passion for hair had always been there, so I started small—selling hair and beauty products. It was a slow start, but I knew I wanted to build something bigger.

Thankfully, my mother, who has always owned her own salon, served as my inspiration. Watching her work hard and succeed showed me the value of being my own boss. I began studying her techniques, doing research, and enrolling in a couple of classes to expand my skills. I practiced on my friends, constantly working to perfect my craft.

From the beginning, I had a clear goal: to leave Baltimore and create a fresh start after graduation. Once I graduated, I followed through on that dream and moved to North Carolina. During the transition, I had already started to build a small reputation for myself in the hair world. But moving to a new state meant starting from scratch, which wasn’t easy.

In those early months, I worked tirelessly to build my clientele, investing in my skills and practicing nonstop. Within just one month, my hard work began to pay off—clients were coming in steadily, my books were consistently full, and I was finally thriving. By God’s grace, I was able to achieve what felt like a huge milestone: opening my own salon within my first year of moving to North Carolina.

This journey has taught me the value of persistence, passion, and faith. It’s been far from easy, but every challenge has shaped me into the person and stylist I am today.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I faced numerous challenges along the way, including building a clientele in a city where I didn’t know a single person, working out of my home to save up for my salon, and figuring out how to reach my target audience in an entirely new state.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I specialize in weave extensions and am best known for my seamless, flat sew-ins. One of my proudest accomplishments is becoming a salon owner at just 20 years old. What sets me apart is my unwavering work ethic—I’ve yet to meet anyone who matches my determination to achieve what they want. If I say I’m going to do something, anyone who knows me personally can tell you: I’ll make it happen, no matter what.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was always involved in something—whether it was hair, soccer, cheerleading, sewing, or dancing, I kept myself busy. But in high school, my mindset shifted. I realized I wanted to be my own boss, so I decided to step back from everything else and focus entirely on myself and perfecting my craft.
