Rising Stars: Meet Avión Hunter of Raleigh

Today we’d like to introduce you to Avión Hunter

Hi Avión, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
As a child growing upon St.Croix U.S.V.I, in Fredensbourg Project, I started doing the kids hair in my neighborhood, That became a weekly thing, that the parents would ask me to do to get the kids prepared for school the next day,I turned it into a business, and charged a small fee, that started growing with more and more kids, Then the parents started asking me to do their hair, My business grew so much, I asked the the project manager if I could use the community canter every Saturday from 8 am to 5, I got the yes, and my Love for the Beauty industry, grew from there. This was all prior to graduating high school, Once I graduated, I wanted to explore the world, I move to Newark New Jersey and went to Wilfred Beauty Academy, Graduated from there, worked in a hair salon in Irvington N.J, immediately after graduating , about a year later, I relocated to Raleigh , where my Love and passion for my industry grew even more, I have opened and closed 2 salons, Now on my third one, which is a 7 room salon suite and working on a much larger one with at least 25 suites, this is my retirement plan, I am currently 30 plus years in this industry, and now ready to remove myself fro behind the chair.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I cause wish I could say it was a smooth road, but, No, Would I change anything?, No, Absolutely not, Because, I always told my sons, Struggles come to make you Stronger and teach you lessons, along with, Nothing worth having comes easily. When I started I this beauty industry, it was not as crowded as it is now, this industries truly a saturated industry, but, it’s still the best industry to be a part of, I was a single parent wit two sons until 13 years ago, my sons are 27 and 32, I got no public assistance, except health insurance for them, none for myself, no child support, so everything was on me, and what I could do in the salon, so, it all at that point, was like a hustle, and that is not how you run a “business” I’d gotten to the point where I was sooo exhausted , I hated going into the salon, but, I had No other choice, these two boys was looking at me for everything. But that was not the worse part for me, The beauty industry, is a great industry, but some of the beauticians, who advertise that they so-call, want to help you, and all they do is literally rob you of your hard earned money, and add NO value to what you were already doing, it’s very sad. That has happened to me a couple of times, Once on a really large scale financially, then on a small scale , I am also an educator, and I always Over Deliver on anything I sell, but, for too many stylist in this industry, they under deliver, and that’s sickening to me.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Taking Risks is generally not something I do, I am a woman of Strong Faith, So whatever the Holy Spirit prompts me to do, that I do, So , I walk by Faith, Not by sight, So Risk taking, no matter what form, has never been something I have done, nor will I ever do.
