Check Out Allison Neiss’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Allison Neiss

Hi Allison, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Growing up in North Carolina, I always admired the pottery in local stores and the pieces my grandparents collected in their home. However, I didn’t start taking pottery classes until my late 30s. At the time, I had a young child and felt that I needed a hobby to give me time for myself and an outlet for creativity. After my first semester of classes, I realized how much I enjoyed it and haven’t stopped making pottery since.

The idea of starting a small business came when friends asked if I was selling my pottery. After making a few sales, I decided to build my online presence.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
When I first started selling pottery, I received several custom orders for my large flutter bowl sets. While I had no problem making them, the issue was keeping up with getting them fired at my local studio. I realized this was a problem and took the risk of investing in my own kiln and home studio setup. From there, I gained full control over when I wanted to fire my pieces and no longer had to depend on anyone else.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I love to make pottery that is functional, elegant, and adds beauty to any space. My signature style is my flutter bowls, which come in various sizes and glaze combinations. I am most proud when people share with their friends the pottery they have purchased from me and the word-of-mouth recommendations that result. What sets me apart from others, besides my signature style, is my white-glove service. I always put my customers first and ensure they are happy with the ceramic pieces they purchase.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory is going on beach vacations with my family. I have always been drawn to the Caribbean blue colors of the water. I draw inspiration from the beautiful beaches I have visited when choosing glazes for my pottery. I even name some of my pieces after tropical locations I’ve visited — for example, my Aruba Flutter Bowl Set.
