Community Highlights: Meet Steph Coffman of SC Signature Celebrations

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steph Coffman

Hi Steph, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started my career as a high school teacher and had the opportunity to plan several events with the Student Government Association. I had always loved planning, and this allowed me to utilize my planning skills and creativity to make events for others to enjoy. After I left the classroom I worked for a nonprofit planning conferences, and volunteered for social organizations where I planned events for community members. These experiences led me to realize that planning events is where my passion lies, and while interning for a luxury wedding planner in Charlotte, I discovered that weddings is the niche I wanted to focus on. I started my own wedding planning and coordination business in January 2024 and have thoroughly enjoyed helping couples plan their special day. I am looking forward to helping even more couples in 2025!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I grew up thinking I wanted to be a teacher and went to college for that. I discovered after a few years that the classroom was not where I was meant to be, and I have made several pivots in my career before landing in the wedding industry. It has definitely been challenging figuring out what I want to do with my life, but I have finally found it. My other major challenge has been starting my own business with little experience in doing so. I have had to learn about managing my own couples, building a business, and pursuing continuing education in the wedding industry, all while still working my 9 to 5 as an IT project manager to support myself while I build up my company.

As you know, we’re big fans of SC Signature Celebrations. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
SC Signature Celebrations was started in January 2024 when one of my friends asked me to help them plan their wedding. I took a leap of faith and decided to launch my business as I worked with her, and was able to to book four more weddings in 2024, 18 in 2025, and 3 for 2026! I offer full planning, partial planning, and coordination so that couples can get exactly what they need to help their dream day come true. I think something that sets me apart from others is that my focus is on building strong, positive relationships with my couples. I want them to feel like I’m their new wedding bestie, someone they can turn to for advice and talk to about anything, not like this is a business-client relationship. By building this sense of trust and understanding, couples feel confident that I will keep their vision and needs central throughout the process.

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
I highly suggest finding a group of professionals in the same area as you where you feel safe to ask questions. I was able to find a wedding planner networking group that meets bi-monthly for continuing education, but we also have a group chat where we can ask for advice, vendor referrals, and just generally checking in. Additionally, shadowing someone who has been in the industry for a long time has been crucial to my development as a wedding planner.
