Today we’d like to introduce you to Bridgette Alston
Bridgette, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In the summer of 2024, I reached a breaking point in my life. I felt like I was drowning, unable to get my head above water. It was as if I was carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders. I felt worthless, not good enough, unseen, and undervalued. I desperately needed an outlet, a way to find my voice. I needed a way to find myself. I was lost, unhappy, and felt like life had completely broken me down to rock bottom.
Then, one day, I wrote a poem about everything I was dealing with in my personal life. I discovered an open mic event in Charlotte, NC, and that night, I poured my heart out to the audience. It was like a breath of fresh air. I will never forget how I felt that night. It was truly an exhilarating and freeing experience. Also, to my surprise, the audience loved my piece. From that moment on, the host invited me to their writer’s workshop to develop my poetry further.
I was challenged with different writing styles and prompts, but I quickly became skilled at expressing myself through poetry. To my surprise, people genuinely enjoyed hearing what I had to say, and from then on, I never looked back.
Since then, I’ve performed on several local stages and even out of state. I’ve grown so much within the poetry community. I’ve found friends, a group that doesn’t judge me, and most importantly, I’ve found a sense of peace.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
This journey I’ve been on has been far from easy. I had to learn how to be vulnerable and speak my truth to people who were complete strangers at the time. I didn’t know if they would understand my perspective or judge me for what I’ve been through.
One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that my art is mine. It didn’t matter if the crowd liked what I was saying or not. I just had to keep going. I had to learn to trust myself and articulate my thoughts well enough for others to understand my point of view.
One thing I’ve struggled with, and still do, is the question: “Am I good enough?” Sometimes, I feel like I am, but other days, I don’t feel that way at all. I often wonder, “When will it be my time?”
When it came to memorization, I won’t lie, I’ve had moments where I completely forgot my words. Thankfully, it didn’t happen in front of a large crowd! Still, I promised myself that I would not allow that to happen again because it felt absolutely horrible and embarrassing.
Even now, I still get nervous right before it’s my turn to take the stage. It feels like my heart is pounding outside of my chest, but I keep pushing forward!
