Today we’d like to introduce you to Dax Trail
Hi Dax, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Tattooing has always been my dream job, but for the longest time, I was too scared—scared of failure, judgment, and the uncertainty of it all. Growing up, I was a “science girlie” with a scholarship to study in that field, so I pushed aside my artistic passions and pursued a career in nursing, hoping to become a nurse practitioner one day.
But then life threw me a curveball. My spouse was diagnosed with cancer and needed a full-time caretaker. I had to drop out of college and lost my scholarship. It was a tough, defining moment in my life, but it also forced me to reflect on what I really wanted. I thought, “If not now, when?” and decided to go all-in on my dream of becoming a tattoo artist.
Once my spouse’s health stabilized, I dove in headfirst. I spent countless hours honing my drawing skills, building both physical and digital portfolios, and persistently reaching out to tattoo artists to let me shadow them. After about a year of practice—on fake skin and even on myself—I finally got my license and started tattooing friends. Word spread, and friends started referring their friends. Little by little, I improved, built my AMAZING client base, and gained the confidence I needed.
Now, here I am, five (or six?) years later, living my dream— especially thanks to the people who allow me to tattoo them. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m so grateful for every step that led me here.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As I’ve mentioned, the journey to get here wasn’t easy. Becoming a tattoo artist is incredibly hard, and building a career that’s sustainable is even harder. But I couldn’t have done it alone. I owe so much to the amazing community that has surrounded me with love, encouragement, and support every step of the way. I’m endlessly grateful for the people who believed in me, trusted me with their stories and their skin, and helped me grow into the artist I am today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a tattoo artist who specializes in what I like to call “botanicals and dainty things.” My heart is deeply tied to vintage botanical illustrations, delicate linework, cottagecore and celestial themes, and the beauty of nature as a whole.
What I’m most proud of isn’t just the art itself but the incredible clients this niche has brought into my life. Every session feels like a gift, and I always leave with a little extra glow from the warmth, kindness, and connection my clients bring into the studio. They make this journey so much more special.
I think what might set me apart is my focus on creating a private and inclusive environment. As someone with ASD, I really understand how overwhelming and stressful getting a tattoo can feel. I do my best to curate the process with care, making it as comfortable and calming as I can for each client.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is creating a sense of connection and care. I want the people I interact with to feel seen, heard, and valued. I hope my clients leave the studio feeling more confident and uplifted than when they arrived. That’s what’s most important to me.
