Conversations with Haleigh Dixon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Haleigh Dixon

Hi Haleigh, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Amanda and I became friends because we lived across the street from each other. One day Amanda asked if I wanted to get fairy hair with her and I said yes. I was in the process of shopping for wedding dresses and stumbled across a cute boutique the week before and had already made an appointment to go and look for a dress that same afternoon. I asked Amanda to come with me to the appointment and she agreed. We got our fairy hair and dash of sparkles and went to my bridal appointment. I wasn’t expecting to find my dress that but I did! A few months later she asked if I would be interested in trying to do fairy hair as a business. We thought it would be fun to have an excuse to hang out more and make a little money on the side. I said I would give it a shot if she could teach me how you put it in. She taught me how, we bought all of the supplies, made our logo and social media pages soon after. We had our first appointment that was actually a group of six. At the time I was a little nervous because it took us quite a while to do all of their hair, but we kept at it and started booking markets. By the holiday season we feeling more confident and booking bigger events. When 2024 hit, I wasn’t sure if we would keep going but we did and had a great year! We ended up having to split up and do events separately because we were booking two or more things a weekend.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Some of the bumps we experienced were trying to figure out which events were worth paying for and which weren’t. Sometimes you’ll pay $100 for four hours and not make your money back and sometimes you don’t pay for an event that ends up being better than any paid event you’ve done. We were also struggling at the beginning with finding quality fairy hair that wouldn’t melt with hot tools or damage anybody’s hair. Summer was a struggle in 2024 because we were often outside in the hottest part of the day and at first we weren’t prepared with a tent, fans or towels to keep us cool.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Amanda and I are both in healthcare as our normal 9-5 jobs. She is a genetic counselor and I am a chiropractor. Doing fairy hair on the weekends and weeknights feels like a fun and relaxing way to get out of the house and make some extra money on the side. I feel like we do quality work and are always getting compliments from our clients about how many compliments they get on their hair and how long their strands last for. Amanda especially is really great about making sure our clients are happy with their service and that they get their moneys worth when they choose to spend it on our fairy hair.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Thankfully having a fairy hair business is relatively low risk. The biggest risk we take are spending more on vendor fees. We really have to think about who our potential client is and if they will be attending certain events. We have a few companies that we regularly do events with because they do a great job of attracting the clientele that is interested in our service.

Pricing:

  • Our services range from $15-$40 regularly, but if you want more strands we can do that as well.
  • Our party pricing is by the strand with a 50 strand minimum at $1.75 a strand. We also have a travel fee per mile from our home base.
