Conversations with Joey Humphrey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Joey Humphrey

Hi Joey , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Short answer, I was fired from my first job as a hair stylist 1 year out of hair school. Being fired put my back against the wall and leaving me with no choice but to go out and succeed or else. I took that lesson and let it fuel my desire to not only do well in life but to help others to do the same. I started my career as a salon owner only 3 years after being fired. I was first in, last out everyday doing all I could to grow. Once becoming a salon owner, I began helping other stylist meet and surpase their goals in life. Helping others became just as rewarding as making more money. Fast forward 20+ years I have helped many stylist that you may know in the Raleigh area. Now I have also branched out into the real estate field and in 2023 became a Land Developer on the side with an emphasise on helping those who have inherrited land and are looking to develop it without selling all of their land. Helping those with family land be able to afford their land while being able to keep some in the family and being able to live a happy life.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Never a smooth road, but with anything worth much, hard work is always part of the plan. Starting a business and maintaining a business has its ups and downs. From great new hires, to great people choosing to leave and go out on their own, to having bad hires stay around for a year to long, to having to survive a business during Covid and 2020 with all that came with that whole time period.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a artist at heart, so being a hair stylist “just fit”. Being able to work well with my hands and create any image I have in my head on someone elses head has always been my gift. I always say that I create a hairstyle/haircut that fits a clients head and lifestyle. The object is to make “functional” art. Something someone can easily recreate themselves and last for a longer period of time.
I am most proud of the fact that I have carried on all the art of hairstyling that I first learned of from watching my mother who was a hairstylist for 40 years.
I think what sets me apart from others is my devotion to my team members, without them I would not have the abilities to do all that I get the chance to do in life. So working with my team and having a team that work very well together is what sets us apart.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was always outside. I love the outdoors, and would always find some type of water to be around, like a pond, river, lake, or beach.
I was always very competitive, and found myself always liking things that would push the bounderies. Adreneline Junkie.
