Today we’d like to introduce you to Naomi Gingerich
Naomi, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
In 2017, my daughter and I quit our 9-5 jobs to follow a dream of opening a bakery. With $3000 and the Kitchen Aid mixer my mother gave me in 1992, we opened our first booth at the local farmer’s market where we sold our baked goods. For the next 3 and a half years, we did over 500 pop-ups throughout our city, and in December 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, we opened our storefront in the historic West End of Winston-Salem.
We specialize in our signature Amish Cinnamon Rolls made from a heritage recipe, hand-rolled in small batches and covered in a boiled brown sugar frosting. We also feature cakes, donuts and pies reminiscent of our grandmother’s table, and use seasonally inspired recipes to create other decadent desserts. Everything in our kitchen is made from scratch, using organic North Carolina milled flour.
Our cafe also features a full espresso and tea bar, and lunch is served daily at 11:00. Our hours are Monday – Saturday, 7 AM – 5 PM.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the challenges we faced was planning how to open a storefront in the middle of the pandemic. Fortunately, we were able to increase our customer base during that season by offering Provision Packages. This was a pre-packaged assortment of specialty baked goods customers could order and pick up each week. By the time we opened our cafe in December of 2020, we had tripled our customer base which provided a steady stream of revenue.
As you know, we’re big fans of Louie and Honey’s Kitchen. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are known for our Amish Cinnamon Rolls, made from a heritage recipe with mashed potatoes in the dough. They are made from scratch each morning, hand rolled in small batches and covered in a boiled brown sugar frosting. Our customers come from all over North Carolina and adjoining states to make these rolls a part of their weekly tradition.
In our cafe, we are known for our exceptional customer service, excellent coffee and baked goods that remind people of something their grandmother may have made.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Following a dream generally translates into hard work. But if you have a product that is unique and is something that appeals to people, you will likely experience success if you’re not afraid to work hard.
