Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzanna Mamatkulava.
Hi Suzanna, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I never imagined I would become a photographer, but life often takes us in unexpected directions. My first camera was a gift from my parents for my 16th birthday. At the time, I used it just for fun and never thought twice about it. My second camera, however, was my own choice. In 2019, at the age of 20, I decided to take photography more seriously. I started learning, exploring, and even bought an online course. At first, I was drawn to nature and animal photography as a hobby, often taking my camera along on walks and trips. Looking back, I realize that’s when my passion for photography truly began.
However, without nurturing that passion, it eventually burned out. My camera sat on a shelf, untouched, for a while. It wasn’t until I moved to North Carolina and met a friend who was a photographer that I picked up my camera again. My first real photoshoot happened thanks to an amazing person and mentor who invited me to shadow her in April 2023. That experience reignited my love for photography and opened a door to a new chapter in my life.
Overcoming my anxiety about photographing people was one of my biggest challenges. I even did a personal challenge where I went to a public place and asked strangers if I could take their photos. It was terrifying—my hands were shaking—but I managed to ask one lady and a group of girls taking selfies. To my relief, they said yes, and it helped me realize the world wouldn’t crash, even if someone said no (luckily, that didn’t happen).
Since then, I’ve invested time into learning from other photographers, taking courses, and attending workshops. Slowly but surely, I’ve built my vision and style. Now, I’m more excited than ever about photography, constantly experimenting and trying new things. It’s amazing to look back and see how far I’ve come—and I can’t wait to see where this journey takes me next.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the biggest struggles I faced on my photography journey was overcoming my fear of rejection and self-doubt. When I started exploring portrait photography, I felt incredibly anxious about asking people to let me take their photos. I was afraid they would say no, or worse, judge my work. Imposter syndrome has also been a major hurdle. I often doubt myself and my work, constantly questioning whether I’m good enough or if this is the right path for me. There are times when I’ve put so much effort into my work and received little to no feedback in return, which can be incredibly draining. It’s during those moments that I’ve thought about giving up.
But what I’ve learned is that practice and passion have a way of making those doubts disappear. When I’m behind the camera, everything else fades away—I just go and create. That’s been the best advice and solution: to keep going, no matter what. Even a bad experience teaches you what not to do, and that’s still valuable.
I actively sought out opportunities to improve. I looked for models, connected with people who wanted photos, and even went out to public places and asked strangers if I could take their pictures. It wasn’t easy, but every time I stepped out of my comfort zone, I became better.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a portrait photographer based in Raleigh, NC, specializing in capturing raw emotions and authentic stories. My work focuses on creating images that feel deeply personal and timeless, blending natural elegance with a touch of bold creativity. I offer a variety of sessions, including maternity shoots, couple portraits, and creative, conceptual photography.
What I’m most proud of is my ability to connect with people on a personal level, helping them feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera. Many clients come in feeling unsure or camera-shy, and seeing their faces light up when they view their photos is the most rewarding part of my work.
What sets me apart is my approach—I’m not just taking pictures; I’m creating an experience. I aim to tell each client’s unique story through my lens, making every session feel special and tailored to them. Whether it’s capturing the tender anticipation of a maternity shoot or crafting an artistic concept, my focus is always on bringing out the emotions that make the moment meaningful.
I also constantly push myself creatively, experimenting with new techniques and ideas to ensure my work stays fresh and exciting. Photography for me isn’t just a job—it’s a passion, and I pour that passion into every project I take on.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5–10 years, I see the photography industry becoming even more dynamic and personalized. With advancements in technology, like AI-powered editing tools and high-quality smartphone cameras, there’s a growing emphasis on creativity and storytelling rather than just technical skills. People are looking for photographers who can deliver unique, meaningful experiences, not just beautiful images, and I believe this shift will continue to shape the industry.
I also think we’ll see more demand for niche and personalized photography—whether it’s creative conceptual shoots, candid lifestyle portraits, or intimate storytelling sessions. Social media will keep driving trends, with clients increasingly looking for photographers who can provide images that reflect their individuality and fit into their personal or brand aesthetic.
For me, the biggest opportunity is staying adaptable—embracing new tools and trends while staying true to my unique style. The heart of photography will always be human connection, and I believe those who focus on creating authentic and emotional stories will thrive no matter how much the industry evolves.
