Today we’d like to introduce you to Brent Deitrich
Hi Brent, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always worked in some form of media / content / publication. First as a freelancer, then I worked for a larger regional set of publications based across the east coast. I went full time as a wedding and portrait photographer 17 years ago, and then in 2017 decided to start my own publication (The White Wren) What was birthed as a wedding publication (we do print as well as digital) is growing into a home, love, and lifestyle publication. We have plans to expand into more entertainment categories, and started a podcast called Nested this past year as well.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The publication market has been fraught with constant closures. Having a print magazine definitely has it’s challenges as most wedding market publications stopped doing this years ago. Ours is more of a coffee table type of magazine, and we typically only do an issue a year. There is always the challenge of ensuring that there is a good return on investment for our advertising partners, keeping our views and engagement up digitally. Our team also works remotely all over the country, which presents more challenges for keeping in touch as a group!
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’ve been a photographer almost all my life. I love creating visual mediums, whether that is photography, brand content, or video / motion visuals. It took several years until I found what made me happy stylistically. I lead a local business mastermind network in addition to a commercial content company. Everyone always knows that I have a lot of different businesses and am always diversifying!
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
Doing the hard work is what grew our businesses. Making connections and networking – so many people want overnight insta-fame from social media, and the vast majority of small businesses don’t work that way. It takes a lot of time and dedication and hard work. If you can survive the first few years, you should be good. My biggest advice is always to approach what you do with a business mindset. As creatives, that is often a fault – we look at our businesses emotionally vs. factually. But you have to realize that the ultimate goal should always be to create a profitable business!
