Today we’d like to introduce you to Angela Von Canon
Hi Angela, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am blessed with my art business, Art & Soul Sisters Studio, LLC. I began with visual arts when I was 8 years old when my Uncle Kenny purchased my first 35mm camera and tripod for me as a Christmas gift. I take snapshots to this day – and several prints have sold of the Bahamas, Charleston, and local forestry.
As I got older, my best friend Ginger and I took Art I and Art II together in high school. I honed a lot of my sketching and crafts skills with her in class. To this day, Ginger remains a driving force to keep me motivated and fills me with fresh ideas.
As far as my paintings go, I have been fortunate enough to have my artwork appear in a local art gallery showing. However, my now 12-year-old son had his first art gallery exhibit before I did. I am one proud mama. My 31-year-old daughter is equally talented as she is fantastic with painting; she has been painting since she was about 5 with her great-grandmother.
Today, I work with other local artisans such as Pena Artworks & Designs, Music with Miss Kassie, and The White Street Market & Candle Bar through collaborations. All of us enjoy helping our community of predominantly Wake County residents through our artistic talents. Although I have an art studio at my house, the venue I like to call home is MK Creative Arts Studio in Wake Forest. They have an enchanting aesthetic as a dance studio which converts nicely into a comfy art workshop, too. You can also find Art & Soul Studio at The Stables Marketplace in Franklinton, Norse Brew Co., and Rolesville Parks & Rec.
I have branched out from photography and painting to include mosaics, toddler art, family and multi-generational paintings, date night/paint nights, faux (resin) stained glass, Turkish mosaic lamps, ceramics, and water marbling or hydro-dipping. My passion has grown for resin as this is now my specialty. We travel to you, too.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
To get to this point, it has not been a smooth road, but the challenging path has taught us a lot about ourselves, our community, and our art. The major struggle along the way has included finding the right venues to conduct business with long-term. Also, not all attendees or venues are hip to having a Christian-based company teaching art classes. We stand resolute in our beliefs, but we never force our beliefs, other than artistic techniques, onto anyone. We are judgment-free.
We’ve been impressed with Art & Soul Sisters Studio, LLC, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
First, we are not your typical canvas art instructors. We have me, my son, my daughter, Mai, and Cindy onboarded and background-checked. Each one of us has an outgoing personality with a strong willingness to teach with patience and kindness.
We are set apart from other art teachers because we are always evolving. We look for the next trend. We seek out opportunities for collaborations with other artists. We have lower pricing than many other venues and instructors. We keep a low overhead, and plenty of materials on hand, and each of us specializes in differing arts and crafts.
Cindy is phenomenal with upcycling to make new art, and she is the master of introductory crochet and resin. Mai loves working with children for paint classes. My daughter, Kyla, predominantly works with children, too, but she is quickly learning the art of resin with dried flowers. My son, Kingston, teaches a Pokemon-inspired crafting club. His specialty is sketching and using colored pencils.
Our company is known for being the original faux stained glass local instructors. This has made us the most proud as we see repeat customers who follow us from venue to venue and class to class.
Art & Soul Studio is always looking for new ways to aid the community. We are here for team builders, private parties, birthdays, and fundraising activities. We are starting new Seniors, Pre-K, and homeschool programs. We are beginning a sensory class in March for our neurodivergent young artists-in-training. We are not afraid to try new things!
Can you share something surprising about yourself?
Something surprising most people who know me or have attended any of my classes may not know about me is I used to travel the country as a Comi-con photographer. I met many talented artists, actors, and cosplayers.
