Life & Work with Marquise Peoples of Greensboro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marquise Peoples

Hi Marquise, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Since I was young, I’ve always loved the beautiful things in life. I’ve always loved painting, drawing, crafting in general.
Around the age of 11/12, it was a though something clicked for me regarding fashion. I started playing with patterns and colors, paying attention to what the celebrities were wearing, and finding my own style. Through high school, I made distressing denim jeans, jackets etc. a hobby, I loved it, this further ignited my passion for fashion. That being said, my senior year of high school, I was accepted into The Art Institute of Charlotte for fashion design. Being at the Art Institute was great, I learned the fundamentals of fashion design. While there, I spoke with a friend from high school and she informed me of the fashion program at North Carolina A&T State University, I applied. Getting accepted into North Carolina A&T State University and transferring form the Art Institute changed my life. The instructors were amazing and pushed their students to creatively design. Being at North Carolina A&T State University and trusting God, I decided to step out on faith and start my own brand. In 2020, my brand Monsieur, started with hats, sunglasses and T shirts. Although sales were great, I eventually took a break from Monsieur to focus on school and work. Fast-forward to 2024, I decided to relaunch the brand due to consistent request and personal desire, ready for this new journey and looking forward to what lies ahead.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Starting a fashion line is not easy. Purchasing things like samples, marketing tools, and having the will power to push your business even if responses are limited and sales are low can be taxing on a business owners finances and morale, but we overcome! Especially if you believe in your business. Owning a business is going to be a learning process and people are always going to have an opinion on how you should run your business. What I’ve learned is to take information that is valuable to you and listen to your gut.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I run, what I love to call, a luxury streetwear brand. Locally known for our good quality products and exclusivity. Once a product is sold out, you will rarely see it again.A product will be replaced with something new, like a new color scheme, a fabric or a design.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5 years, I see the streetwear fashion industry going more into a tailor-made focus. Everyone is looking to be different, in addition, there is a rise in young designers who aren’t afraid to push the envelope and add their signature on streetwear. Exclusivity and branding is also going to shape the future of streetwear, as the influx of designers grow, more signature looks and silhouettes will start emerging in streetwear spaces.
