Today we’d like to introduce you to Latika Skinner

Hi Latika, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have always had a deep passion for the beauty and fashion industry, and creativity has been a driving force in my life. From a young age, I enjoyed drawing fashion designs, playing dress-up, and experimenting with nail art. However, after graduating high school, my path became uncertain, and I found myself surrounded by the wrong influences. In 2014-2015, I realized I needed to make a change. In a somewhat unexpected turn, I decided to enroll in nail school, unsure of whether I would be accepted or enjoy the program. I discovered a true passion for the craft, which led me to pursue and grow my career as a nail artist. Between 2018 and 2019, I had the incredible opportunity to work with a few well-known figures in the entertainment industry, including a few celebrities and the BET network. I felt as though I had reached the peak of my career. However, God had different plans for me. As COVID-19 approached, I was forced to close my business, and I struggled with the decision of whether or not to return to doing nails. It wasn’t until a few years later that God placed a deep desire in my heart to pursue a cosmetology education. Unsure of how it would unfold, I prayed about it, applied, and was accepted into school. Now, I’m on a new journey, learning a different craft. While I don’t yet own a salon, my love and passion for the beauty industry have only grown stronger. My ultimate goal is to work behind the scenes in the entertainment industry doing award shows, red carpet looks, editorial looks and more. I want to incorporate all of my skills like styling, hair, makeup artistry, and nail designs. The goal is to also bring nourishment and creativity to the salon world in a way that fosters kindness and completely transforms people’s lives.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey has certainly been challenging, nothing in life is ever perfect, right? As a believer, I trust that the Lord is guiding my steps, already knowing where I will be in my career five to ten years from now. Looking back, I tried to handle everything in my own strength, only to burn myself out. I struggled with seeking God first before making business decisions, all while juggling the demands of everyday life. Fast forward to today, becoming a wife and a mother has made things even more challenging. Maintaining a successful business or stepping into something new is never easy. But when you have a clear purpose and understand why you’re doing it, that purpose keeps you moving forward.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Currently, I specialize in luxury services, offering personalized experiences by traveling to my clients to meet their needs. My expertise lies in natural nail care and nail art, and I’m recognized for my creativity. I take pride in the artist I’ve become and all that I have accomplished so far. I’m also proud to be furthering my education to expand my knowledge and enhance my craft. Being a luxury service provider allows me to make a meaningful impact on others through my work. I believe that my passion for this industry, along with my dedication and commitment to serving others, is what truly sets me apart.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I enjoy listening to podcasts and audiobooks while I work. It’s a great way to learn and grow. I believe that in order to care for others, you must first take care of yourself, mind, body, and soul. Pouring into yourself allows you to better understand and serve those around you.
