Today we’d like to introduce you to Russell Giroux
Hi Russell, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Photography has been part of my life since high school, where I was a photographer and editor for our yearbook. But my journey to Russell Captures truly began eight years ago, thanks to my mom. She handed me a Canon DSLR camera and said, ‘I can’t figure this out—you give it a try.’ As an engineer and constant problem solver, I couldn’t resist the challenge. That moment reignited my passion for photography, setting me on a path I never expected.
Before making photography my full-time career, I spent 18 years in the software industry, combining technical expertise with creativity to enhance user experiences. That same problem-solving mindset now helps me craft visually compelling images that tell authentic stories.
Originally from the Boston area (though I’ve lost the accent!), I love exploring new places and meeting new people. I’ve lived in San Francisco and Nashville before settling in Raleigh in 2012 with my wife, Lindsay, and now our son, Eric. Overcoming Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at 18 taught me to cherish every moment—a perspective that deeply influences my work and why I choose to pursue photography full-time.
At Russell Captures, I bring together technical skill, artistic vision, and a passion for storytelling to create vibrant, personal images that celebrate life’s moments. But what I love most is seeing my clients’ reactions—their excitement, their joy, and the impact a single photo can have.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Leaving a stable full-time job to launch a small business was both exciting and terrifying. The uncertainty was overwhelming at times, and the timing of starting Russell Captures made things even trickier. I had set out on this journey before COVID, but with so much changing in the world, I wasn’t sure when—or if—it would be the right time to officially launch a portrait photography business.
Beyond the timing, I quickly realized that running a small business involves so much more than just taking great photos. Even with a background in business, I wasn’t fully prepared for all the moving pieces—accounting, client management, branding, and the biggest challenge of all: marketing. Standing out in a crowded space and making people aware of your work is tough. You can create amazing images, but if people don’t see them or understand the value of what you offer, it’s hard to grow.
Despite the challenges, this journey has been incredibly rewarding. I’ve learned so much—not just about running a business, but also about pushing myself creatively. Taking the leap has led to opportunities I never imagined and introduced me to amazing people I never would have met otherwise. The road hasn’t been smooth, but every challenge has helped shape me into a stronger photographer, entrepreneur, and storyteller.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The biggest thing that sets me apart—and what I hear most from my clients—is that I make photography approachable and comfortable, especially for people who aren’t used to being in front of the camera. My goal is to create a relaxed, natural experience so that you walk away with photos that feel like you.
Two areas I specialize in are family portraits and high school senior portraits. As a dad myself, I bring a unique perspective to this space. Many photographers lean toward highly stylized, glamorous shots, but I focus on celebrating who you are—capturing your best self without making you feel like you have to be someone you’re not.
I also know what it’s like to feel unsure in front of a camera. Unlike many in the industry, I didn’t grow up in performing arts or being photographed often. That experience helps me bring a real sense of empathy to my sessions, guiding people who might feel awkward or nervous so they can feel confident and at ease.
Being married to a special education teacher has also shaped my approach, especially when working with kids. I’ve learned so much from my wife about how to engage children in a way that makes them feel comfortable—following their lead, being patient, and making sessions fun. I often hear from clients, ‘He’s a dad, he gets it,’ and that means a lot to me.
That same mindset carries into every session, whether it’s a high school senior portrait, a professional headshot, or an event. My goal is always to create an easy, enjoyable experience so we can capture great shots together—ones that feel natural, genuine, and truly reflect who you are.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
Even though it’s still a bit cold, now is actually the perfect time to start thinking about spring photos! Spring always seems to sneak up on us, and once everything is in bloom, sessions fill up fast. I’ll be offering Spring Mini Sessions at some of the best parks and gardens around the Triangle, and it’s a great way to get fresh, vibrant portraits without a big time commitment. Whether it’s for families, couples, or just a fun individual session, it’s always one of my favorite times of the year to shoot.
