Today we’d like to introduce you to Consepcion Cruz-Valencia
Hi Consepcion, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do when I graduated from high school, but I had the most knowledge about small business from watching my dad run his own. His hard work and determination shaped my perspective on perseverance and opportunity.
Because of that foundation, I decided to major in Business Administration, keeping my options open. It wasn’t until I took a marketing course with an incredible professor that I discovered my passion for it. Marketing blended creativity and strategy in a way that excited me, and I knew I wanted to explore it further.
During my time at Meredith College, I was actively involved in campus life, from planning long-standing traditions to bringing a new ministry to campus. These experiences strengthened my leadership skills and showed me the power of community and connection.
While in school, I also worked in my dad’s business, handling administrative tasks and logistics. That hands-on experience gave me a deep understanding of how small businesses operate and the importance of communication and adaptability. Since graduating, I’ve built my career in marketing, gaining experience in digital content, event coordination, and community engagement.
Now, as the Director of Marketing and Communications at the Triangle East Chamber of Commerce, I use my skills to support businesses, students, and the community. I’m still early in my career, but I’ve learned that growth comes from taking on new challenges, learning from every experience, and staying open to opportunities.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It hasn’t been a completely smooth road. One of my biggest struggles after graduating two years ago was not having enough marketing experience. My first role was the one I’m in now, and while I was excited, I knew I had a lot to learn.
This job has pushed me to step out of my comfort zone—whether it’s managing social media, leading initiatives, or coordinating events. I’ve had to adapt quickly, take on new challenges, and grow my skills through hands-on experience. Every challenge has been an opportunity to learn, and it’s shaped me into the marketer I am today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in social media, content creation, and strategic communication, with a focus on promoting businesses and the Chamber’s initiatives. As the Director of Marketing and Communications at the Triangle East Chamber of Commerce, I help develop engaging content and communication strategies to promote the Chamber’s mission and support local businesses.
One of my proudest accomplishments has been teaching 9th graders how to create engaging content for social media as part of JOCO WORKS, a workforce development program in Johnston County. This experience allowed me to empower students to drive engagement with their peers on Instagram, which played a key role in promoting the program.
I’m also excited to bring new young professional programming to Johnston County. I’m passionate about fostering career development opportunities for the next generation and helping them connect with the local business community. What sets me apart is my hands-on approach, adaptability, and ability to build connections that drive results, all while staying creative and strategic.
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
I’d like to share that growth comes from stepping outside your comfort zone and taking on opportunities that challenge you. It’s easy to stay in what feels safe, but those challenges push you to learn, adapt, and ultimately become better at what you do. So, I encourage others to embrace those moments, even when they feel daunting, because in the end, they will be worth it. Every challenge I’ve faced has shaped me into who I am today, and I’m excited to continue growing and taking on new opportunities.
