Today we’d like to introduce you to Maya Barbery
Hi Maya, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Bolivia and have had the incredible opportunity to live in the U.S., Ecuador, Bolivia, and Taiwan. My love for languages has led me to speak four fluently, and my passion for travel keeps me constantly dreaming of my next adventure. Meeting new people and learning about their stories is something I deeply enjoy, as it broadens my perspective and enriches my life.
Cooking and trying new foods are among my favorite pastimes, along with reading and spending time with my beloved pets—two cats and three dogs. An avid animal lover, I find joy and comfort in their presence.
I am happily married to my soulmate, and together we navigate life’s adventures. Entrepreneurship has always been a goal of mine, inspired by my parents, who built their own businesses. That passion led me to start my own venture while still working a 9-to-5 job that I truly enjoy. Balancing both worlds has been a rewarding experience, allowing me to pursue my dreams while continuing to grow personally and professionally.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
No business is without its challenges. As an artisan it can take time to build a customer base and become a recognized brand. This includes signing up at various local markets, going to local businesses to partner with them to carry my products, and doing community outreach. Advertising and marketing also play an important role. I took various workshops to learn Canva and social media marketing.
At times it can be difficult to balance and full-time job, caring for an elderly parent, and having my own business. However, my business gives me a creative outlet bring me joy and helping relive stress.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I fell in love with candles in my teens when I bought my first artisan made candle. A few years and quite a few dollars later in my late 20s I decided it was time to learn how to make my own candles. I made them for family, friends, and my personal use.
In late 2020 I was thinking of starting my own business. My husband, Bobby, suggested I sell my candles. I never imagined anyone would want to purchase them. I decided to go for it. I figured, if nothing else, I will have lots of candles to use and gift.
Imagine my surprise when at the first artisan market I signed up for people actually liked my candles and even bought them! My candles are special because they are made with 100% organic soy and contain herbs and crystals. They are made with specific intentions in mind. Over the years I have upgraded from only white candles to a full array of colors, added new scents and designs. Every year I try to create 1 to 2 new varieties. As you can tell, I am very passionate about my them.
As mentioned, above my candles are infused with intentions. This is part of my spiritual practice. Where I live there aren’t many brick and mortar metaphysical shops. So, in the last 2 years, I have been expanding to include these types of items. I made a specialized anointing oil, palo santo spray, home décor made with crystals. I also sell tarot and oracle decks as well as do intuitive readings.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I have lived in big cities for most of my life. When I moved to Gastonia I enjoyed the hometown feeling while still being close to a larger city. I really like the unique one kind places you find like North Main Kava Bar, a non alcoholic family friendly hang out. Webb Custom Kitchen, a 1930s movie theatre turned farm to table restaurant, And the famous Tony’s Ice Cream open since the 60’s, they still have the original decor and have the best milk shakes!
I have to admit I dislike my neighbors practically year round love of fire works. When you have 3 dogs, it is definitely no t a fun time.
