Today we’d like to introduce you to Kyle Mullins
Kyle, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started playing guitar when I was 9 years old and instantly fell in love with music. I listened and played everything. I loved all genres and decades. I played my elementary school talent show not to long after that and learned that all I wanted to ever do was preform for people. By the time I turned 14 I joined my first band and we had a blast preforming for NC state tailgates and competing in battle of the bands as well as I started playing local bars and breweries all around the triangle area by then. That eventually grew into my highschool band “Probable Kauze” who started to build a big local following and preform at all the local venues around the triangle. After highschool was hard because I knew all I wanted to do was music but didn’t know if that was a smart career choice to pursue as its hard to make a living doing it. I started going to weld school and started to weld to fund my music career and with the many stories I developed in the world I started to write music and quickly learned I love writing. There was something amazing about being able to capture emotions through art whether it’s music, or drawing, or some other form. That amazing feeling suddenly got better as I started sharing my music and others started listening. This was about the time I learned I like to write more folk music. I realized that even if only one person enjoyed my songs it was still the greatest feeling in the world. Since then I had always made it my goal to continue to grow my music and my following so that I could always enjoy that feeling and make a living doing what I love the most in this world which is music and art. I eventually quit welding and decided to start music full time. I was watching an up and coming country music singer Wyatt Flores and he surprised me and asked me to open for him an hour before the show started. Getting to play my original music to a sold out show at the Orange Peel in Asheville quickly jump started my music career and allowed me to release my first two singles. That eventually led to me playing my first ever all original headlining show which I sold out at the Birds Nest In Dunn. I now continue to play music and learn new instruments. I have my own band and preform all over the east coast and Nashville Tennessee as well as all over Raleigh playing typically 3-4 shows a week and plan to release many more songs to come as well as keep growing.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Music is not a promising career and there is no single answer on how to make a living doing it. Every person has different success stories and will give you very different advice from one another so it can become very overwhelming at times. Many people often encourage you to quit. Sharing my songs while one of my favorite things to do is also one of the hardest because many of my songs come from dark places. It’s hard enough to talk to my friends about my emotions or problems and when I preform I’m having to do just that in front of total strangers which is not easy. On top of this my music is not for everyone. People like different genres of music and sometimes people feel the need to share if mine isn’t exactly their taste. That being said all of this makes it difficult to stay focused and on the right track but it makes even the smallest victories or success feel 10 times better as you look back at the obstacles that lead you there.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I love all types of art. I love to draw, sculpt, I love photography, I just love to create but over everything I’m a musician. I love to write music and preform for people. Most of my music is unique because it is my stories, they are stories that come from my personal experiences growing up and living which I try and write them in my own unique style in a way that has never been done before. I’m most proud that no matter how many people I’m playing to or, who I’m playing to, I try and put on the best show I can and entertain everyone. Whether I’m playing my original music for people or whether im playing covers of top hits, playing to a thousand people or playing to 2 people im always trying to do my main job as a preforming musician which is to entertain.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Things come in waves and you have to be patient. Just because you may be stuck one month, next month you may have the biggest opportunity’s you’ve ever had open up. The only way you don’t grow is if you don’t work so you have to keep persevering even when it gets hard or others doubt you.
