Life & Work with Regina Pena of Creedmoor

Today we’d like to introduce you to Regina Pena

Hi Regina , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
During the pandemic like most people, I started a new hobby, wood burning. I attended workshops when I could. It was my instructor, Jeanette Eagan and a friend, Leslie Meir that I learned about gourds and the NC Gourds Society.

I started attending more classes and festivals like about using gourds in my art. I have always enjoyed learning new things and wanted to share my experiences and knowledge to others. I started teaching at local library and senior center groups as volunteer work.

My hobby turned into a passion to create beautiful art for and with people. I have been fortunate. Recently, I have been awarded and sponsored the NC Art Council. I was awarded a grant to purchase new equipment to far my skills in not only pyrography but carving and sculpting on gourds. I hope to develop my love of art and share my knowledge to others in my community. I always felt that art makes the world beautiful.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My struggles have been using equipment that is usually more basic than what I need. So I been fortunate to borrow tools from friends to attend my workshops. Things are better now since the grant has allowed me to purchase several tools so I can practice and develop my art at home not just during the workshop.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I teach gourd related classes all over the Triangle area. What is different about my art? I feel that I inspire people to look at art through a different lens. I love to use natural materials like wood and gourds. I usually provide some educational aspect in each class about the materials we are using and why. People have told me that my classes are unique in the sense I use several techniques in one project especially when the project involves a gourd. For example, if we are sculpting on a gourd, the students learn about the process, type of materials/ tools to use, painting the piece and adding special touches.

Any big plans?
I hope to eventually expand teaching and include other areas of NC as well as create more art to share. Perhaps after retirement, I can do what I love more. I am looking forward to providing art to senior centers and community libraries whenever possible. I enjoy inspiring others and bring some joy through art into their lives.
