Daily Inspiration: Meet Isräel Lockamy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Isräel Lockamy

Hi Isräel, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
It all started my fifth year of college; while I was a graduate assistant (GA) at the University of Lynchburg. I was getting my Masters Degree in NonProfit Leadership Studies while also playing basketball one more year because COVID-19 gave people an extra year of eligibility. I was a GA for student development and intramural sports.

Before that, I guess I should tell you I am from Franklinton, NC. And, I went to the University of Lynchburg and majored in Criminology. I also walked-on the basketball team and played all five years I attended the school. Also, while playing I worked in the office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion where I gained A LOT of knowledge and understanding about the world. It also helped with my public speaking. I worked in that office for four years.

The summer after college I was offered a coaching position with a basketball camp and offered the opportunity to travel the United States. I was also pursuing my dream to play basketball overseas during this time. So, I started coaching with the camp and was blessed to meet some amazing people along the way from all over the US. I was also recently able to play basketball overseas in Malta where I averaged 28 points.

I say none of that to brag or boast, but to inspire someone to never quit on themselves and pursue their dreams. I love basketball and I love to help people so it is nothing short of a blessing I’m able to live the life I have dreamed of.

Now back to why I started…I knew that I did not want to work a 9-5 for 20+ years if I did not have to. I have nothing against working a traditional job…especially since I went to college, but I also realized how popular social media was. And, I believe we all have a voice so I would use mine to be a light in the world.

There is so much negativity and lies being spread on social media nowadays. So, I wanted to be that light where people could see my platforms and be inspired, or learn something, or maybe even laugh.

So, I started with quotes on my page. I would just post quotes, and then as time went on I began to make videos speaking about certain topics that were on my mind or that may be considered “uncomfortable.” Then it turned into quotes, videos, and even some gym content. I have been doing this for a little over 3 years now and I want to impact the world in a positive way.

I want people to be comfortable in their own skin and have confidence in themselves. This world is a crazy place at times and I want us all to understand we are all humans first. So, we are essentially the same and we go through life’s ups and downs on a daily basis. But, we were all brought up in different families, cultures, and situations…so technically we are all different. And, we must respect our differences because that’s what makes this world a beautiful place. Just remember as long as you don’t quit, you will always win!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Some days are smoother than others…but overall it has been a rocky road, but it’s something I am passionate about and it’s why I have not given up!

One of the main struggles with my social media content was the “support.” I expected more of my friends to support what I had going on because I would talk to them about what I was doing and they would agree and support me in my face, but not support me outside of us having a conversation. I realized then that it’s not about having support from my friends, but it’s more about making sure I remember why I’m doing this. I now just want each post I make to have a positive impact on just one person because you never know who could see it.

Another small challenge was “consistency.” With me working on campus, playing basketball, then graduating. It was a challenge to stay consistent. Especially when you’re moving around and do not fully know what’s going to happen next in your life. But once you remember your why, and prioritize the things you see most important. It’s not a challenge anymore.

With me playing basketball, it has also been a challenge. I have been scammed and lied to plenty of times in the past three years. And a lot of people wonder why I continue to chase my dream…but it’s because I don’t believe in quitting or giving up something that you truly love and have a passion for.

And the closer you get to your goals you realize it was all necessary and it all molds and shapes you into who you’re becoming!

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I play basketball professionally overseas. I am also now a director for a basketball camp called “Point Guard College” (PGC). The second biggest basketball camp in the world. I travel the US and coach student-athletes from all over the world with this camp in the summer!

When I am home, I deliver packages with Amazon flex. (I have delivered over 10,100 packages) I DoorDash. I recently started dog sitting/walking because I love dogs. And I also continue to create my social media content on a daily basis.
