Inspiring Conversations with Tula Summerford of Design By Tula

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tula Summerford.

Tula Summerford

Hi Tula, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Tula studied at The Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. Tula worked for two of the most prestigious design houses in the industry and was responsible for identifying the newest fashion and color trends for each new season and developing the company’s new product lines.Tula relocated to North Carolina where she became the New Products Design and Development Manager for Westwood Incorporated and coordinated product design, production and technical matters, and sales support between the New York office and the manufacturing facilities throughout the country. From there Tula opened her own Interior Design Firm, Design by Tula

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have been extremely fortunate as my design firm took off immediately. We have grown beautifully over the years & continue to do so. Only struggles would be quality issues and extensive shipping damages which began and continue since Covid.

As you know, we’re big fans of Design By Tula. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I gravitate towards and am most inspired by the integrity and unpretentious style of patterns and designs that are centuries old.

Along with integrating a mix of casual and formal design elements into a space, I aim to create rooms that tell a story, often relying on interesting antiques and heirloom-worthy decor pieces to get the job done.

Project scope includes overall design and space planning. I believe that whether a home is formal or casual, traditional or modern, all rooms should be a reflection of the client’s personality and style. I believe you should feel good each time you enter a room that has been furnished with things you love.

My style is classic, yet eclectic with a modern edge.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Definitely! Customer service and quality Trump all. Companies that had poor customer service and major quality issues are no longer DBT vendors. I use companies that stand behind their product & if there is a quality issue they will stand behind their product and assist in correcting the situation.
