Today we’d like to introduce you to Lindsey Lathrop
Hi Lindsey, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a kid, I’d daydream about what my future job would be. I loved whales — maybe a marine biologist? I liked drawing them, too…so maybe an artist? But I was good at school…maybe a teacher?
I never imagined I’d be running my own career and life coaching business. But it kinda makes sense now.
My first “real” job at age 14 was dressing in 18th-century military attire and playing the fife in a Fife & Drum Corps at a historic fort and resort in Lake George, NY. Yes, you read that correctly. Band practice paid off financially — not in popularity.
From there, I worked in ice cream shops, retail, and restaurants, and at 17, I got invited to work in the HR office of the resort. Thanks to managers and teachers who saw my potential (way before I did), I became the first in my family to pursue higher education, eventually earning my MBA in Organizational Development and my PHR Certification at age 20. It felt pretty cool… and definitely fueled my hustle for gold stars, which I’ve had to unlearn!
Then I graduated into the 2007 recession. No one was hiring new MBAs, so I pivoted to serve in AmeriCorps. I helped high school students explore career paths and access internships and higher education. I taught classes on job and life skills, leadership, personal finance, and resume writing. (LinkedIn wasn’t really a thing yet.)
Over the next seven years, I learned how to write winning grant proposals, fundraise, give presentations, market programs, make websites, build non-profit budgets, create and evaluate programs, and convince business leaders to open their doors to students. I went from AmeriCorps volunteer to Assistant Director, essentially running a small business — because that’s exactly what it was.
Somewhere in the middle of all that, I started coaching and writing resumes on the side. Anytime I overheard someone saying they wanted a new job or dreamed of starting a business, I jumped in to help.
By 2014, I’d saved enough money to leave my non-profit job. Around that time, I landed my first consulting contract in workforce development in California. I also enrolled in coaching school and earned my ICF coaching credential.
I’ve been coaching full-time ever since.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest struggle I’ve faced is living in a country that doesn’t take care of its people. It’s terrifying to know that a major health event could bankrupt me — not because I don’t pay for my own health insurance, but because the plans that are remotely affordable are essentially catastrophic coverage. I try not to dwell on it too much since it’s largely out of my control (beyond voting for people and supporting businesses that actually care).
As you know, we’re big fans of Lindsey Lathrop Coaching. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I’m an ICF-certified coach, resume writer, and LinkedIn strategist. I also teach people how to self-promote — without overwhelming their nervous systems. The more people know what you want and what you have to offer, the better your chances of making it happen.
For years, I coached people on advancing their careers and climbing the corporate ladder. But these days, I’m far more interested in helping people define success on their own terms and explore the question: What’s enough?
What’s enough money — right now and in the long term? What does “retirement” even mean? What are you prioritizing in your life, and why? If it’s your career and it brings you joy, fantastic. But if it’s not… then what?
We’re told that more is always better. That our productivity defines our worth. As a Millennial, I bought into those narratives too — and found burnout and resentment waiting on the other side.
Since most of us can’t opt out of working, let’s figure out how to make it sustainable. Work doesn’t have to come at the cost of our well-being.
My services include:

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
From my experience, the number one thing that helped me when I was starting out as an entrepreneur was having a year of living expenses saved. I also acknowledge what a privilege this is. For me, it took the pressure off. It gave me the space to learn from my mistakes, figure out my services, and understand who I wanted to help.
I also wish someone had warned me about predatory business coaches who claim to have the “secret” to success. Spoiler alert: they don’t. The biggest predictor of success is consistently showing up with your offer. There’s no shortcut for that.
