Hidden Gems: Meet Alyssa Collins of Train with Alyssa

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alyssa Collins

Hi Alyssa, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was eight years old when I first fell in love with movement through gymnastics. The challenge, the discipline, and the feeling of mastering a new skill kept me coming back, but by the time I turned 13, I found myself drawn to cheerleading. I loved the energy, the team dynamic, and the way it pushed me physically and mentally. Cheer became my world, and eventually, it led me to pursue my dream of being an NC State cheerleader my freshman year.

Being a female athlete came with incredible highs but also significant challenges. The pressure to maintain a certain physique, perform at my peak, and constantly meet external expectations started to take a toll. Without realizing it, I developed body dysmorphia and disordered eating habits—constantly critiquing my body and tying my self-worth to how I looked and performed.

At 15, I started exploring fitness beyond my sport, looking for ways to train smarter and fuel my body properly. But instead of finding guidance, I was met with a flood of fad diets, extreme cardio routines, and unrealistic body standards. It wasn’t until I discovered some of the first female Gymshark athletes that I finally started to see fitness in a new light. They promoted strength over thinness, balance over restriction, and a sustainable approach to health that resonated with me in a way nothing else had.

That shift in mindset changed everything. I went on to study Nutrition Science in college, determined to understand how to fuel my body properly and help others do the same. During COVID, I took a leap of faith and pursued my personal training certification, using my knowledge to coach clients and build a community around sustainable fitness and nutrition. I also started sharing my journey online, hoping to create the kind of content I had once needed—something real, relatable, and rooted in science rather than diet culture.

Now, as I work toward my Master’s degree to become a registered dietitian at Meredith College, I continue to work towards helping others build confidence understanding nutrition and find joy in movement.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t always been a smooth road, but every challenge has shaped who I am today. One of the biggest struggles has been my relationship with my body. As an athlete, I was constantly aware of how I looked and performed, and over time, that awareness turned into body dysmorphia and a complicated relationship with food. On one hand, those struggles pushed me to start posting online and sharing my journey, hoping to help others who might be going through the same thing. But on the other hand, it also created this pressure—like my worth was tied to my appearance, and I needed to look a certain way to feel validated or to even justify posting. It’s something I still work on, reminding myself that my value isn’t just in how I look, but in the knowledge, experience, and positivity I can share with others.

Another big challenge was losing the structure and identity that came with being on a team. For most of my life, I was part of something bigger—training, competing, and working toward a goal alongside others. When that chapter ended, I felt a little lost. I had to figure out how to stay motivated on my own, create my own structure, and redefine what fitness meant to me outside of cheerleading.

Balance has also been an ongoing struggle. Between training, creating content, coaching, and prioritizing my own health, it can feel like there’s never enough time in the day. I love what I do, but sometimes it’s hard to juggle everything—filming workouts, making meals, engaging with my audience, and still making time for myself. Learning to set boundaries, take breaks, and focus on sustainability rather than perfection has been key.

Despite these challenges, I wouldn’t change my journey. Every struggle has led to growth, new opportunities, and a deeper understanding of myself and my purpose. I’ve learned that fitness is so much more than just aesthetics, it’s about strength, balance, and feeling good in your own body. That’s what I hope to share with others, so they know they’re not alone in their struggles and that they’re more than enough just as they are.
