Today we’d like to introduce you to Chris Moffitt
Chris, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’ve loved tennis for a very long time. I’m not sure why tennis was the sport I picked up but I really grew to enjoy it. After I graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill and started working full-time, I wanted a new hobby and found it was time to actually start playing tennis. I took lessons as an adult and started to play in more leagues. I learned about the Community Tennis Association in Durham a few years into my “tennis career” and started volunteering. When an opening became available to become director of the CTA, I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to take a bigger role and do my best to expand tennis in the region.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s not always been easy. I work two jobs and I’ve never run an association like this before so widescale planning of events and leagues required a bit more work setting up than I initially anticipated. The first year was definitely a bit of a struggle in terms of balancing time and effort to keep up with all the moving parts of running an organization. Over time, we’ve added staff members that have made things easier and made a lot of the processing much smoother. There are still bumps in the way especially as we grow, but we are in a much better space than we were over a year ago.
We’ve been impressed with Eno Community Tennis Association, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The Eno Community Tennis Association is a non-profit that works to expand and promote tennis in the Durham area. Our mission is to promote the development of tennis in the counties of: Durham, Orange, Chatham, Granville, & Person County. We foster a life-long love of the game in a welcoming environment, encouraging adult players of all ages and skill-levels to be both good players and good sports. We try to get players who are both advanced and beginner out on the court loving a sport that can make you healthier. Anyone in the area that has ever thought about tennis should consider picking it up no matter what age or skill level you are.
Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
I think the best way to find a mentor is to research what you like and find groups and organizations that specialize in it. Start by volunteering with a group and meeting others. I volunteered with our tennis association before being employed there. I got to know the leaders of the organization and worked with them to find the places that I could best assist. Sometimes you need time and you have to put in effort to build a mentoring relationship.
