Conversations with Brett Beasley

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brett Beasley

Hi Brett, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Hey, I’m Brett! I make a shitload of pots and sometimes abstract sculpture. Check it out at www.BeasleyCeramics.com or on Instagram, @BeasleyCeramics.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This life of an artist is not for the faint of heart. One must persevere or you’ll perish! Just because you make good quality art, have wonderful photographs of them and apply to the fancy festivals & art shows… DOES NOT MEAN YOU’LL GET ACCEPTED! That was the one thing I learned early on, getting used to rejection. Furthermore, even if you do get accepted, that does not guarantee any sales… Diversify your income streams with online sales, teaching, part time jobs, whatever it takes to make artwork. Sacrifice for what is important and you’ll be happy.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I make mediocre pots and really bizarre sculpture. I’d say that I’m most ‘known’ for my sculptural pieces because they are so strange. I had a billboard along the highway with an image of my sculpture during 2024… ArtPopStreetGallery.com is a really rad organization that does incredible things for the artists in Mecklenburg county. They had a call for artists, I applied, and was one of the 20 lucky folks that were accepted. So the moral of the story is APPLY, APPLY, APPLY. You miss one hundred percent of the shots you don’t take and you’ll never get into the fancy shows that you don’t apply for.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Be flexible. If I never changed my workflows, life outlook or community network, I would have failed long ago. Diversify. I’m a jack of all trades and a master of many. Just last week I did a part time job with a contractor because they know I’m a fast learner who understands the material world. Don’t be afraid to try things you DON’T understand, you will never learn anything new if you keep doing the same old things.
