Today we’d like to introduce you to Lu Bennett
Hi Lu, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Lu Bennett is a Christian Rap artist, songwriter, and licensed minister based in Durham, NC. Originally from Frankfort, KY, Lu grew up in church but began his musical journey in 2010, writing secular rap as a teenager. During his junior year of high school, he gained recognition when Kentucky State University invited him to open for Waka Flocka and Travis Porter at their homecoming concert, expanding his platform in his hometown.
After graduating high school in 2012, Lu put his music career on hold to focus on his education. He enrolled at Western Kentucky University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management in 2017. However, during his final semester, Lu endured a traumatic experience that plunged him into depression and suicidal thoughts. Drawing on his faith and upbringing as a preacher’s son, he ultimately embraced God’s calling to minister through music, turning his pain into purpose.
Since then, Lu has used Christian Rap as a tool to unify and inspire. He has released multiple projects and singles, headlined events, and collaborated with marquee artists, including Charles Clark, Josiah Russell, K-Drama, Kimberly Michelle Prince, Sanina Barber, and Gene Hoskins. His performances have taken him across Kentucky, Florida, Texas, North Carolina, Virginia, and beyond.
Lu’s mission is to reach broken individuals through the power of testimony and storytelling. By aligning his passion with his purpose, he shares his journey to shed light on the greatest story ever told—the gospel of Jesus Christ.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
While I absolutely love making music and being immersed in the arts, I have definitely encountered struggles throughout my journey. For starters, it can be difficult to remain motivated at times when you are not receiving a consistent return on investment. There are times when things are great and happening back to back, and other times it is sporadic. Additionally, creating and producing quality music is expensive. After finding and paying for beats, paying for studio time, audio engineering, cover arts, and marketing, things can begin to take a toll financially. My “why” is what truly keeps me going.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Christian Rap artist and songwriter, that specializes in thought provoking, heartfelt, creative lyrics. I really believe everything I say, and don’t ride popular trends for clout. This sets me apart from others, who may do what is “in” to draw attention to their music. I am proud to say that my music maintains a healthy balance between authenticity, originality, transparency and modernity.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I don’t necessarily classify good fortune or misfortune as luck or bad luck, but rather a blessing or a lesson from the man upstairs. The most recent example of God at work in my life was a prayer I uttered that came to pass in unbelievable fashion. I badly wanted to connect with a local gospel artist and violinist in my city, that I hadn’t had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with. About two months after that, of all people, at 4:30am, I happen to run into the artist’ sister at the gym. One thing lead to another and now her and I are currently collaborating on some music. Look at God!
