Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessika Patrick.
Hi Jessika, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was raised in a small town and I never was materialistic. I simply enjoyed making memories with my family and friends. I remember my home always being filled with love and experiences. My mom loved capturing moments and hanging them on the walls, our hallway was covered with so many photographs I couldn’t tell you what color the actual wall was, haha. parents hosted things from Christmas parties to galas, granted our home was not huge at all. There was this cute setup that my mother would always have in the corner that consisted of our brown peacock chair and a simple floral arrangement, this is where she took all the guests pictures! It was so amazing to see her turn our home into a whole event center, haha. It was also great to see my dad kickback, relax and smile in those moments. Fast forward to now, you would think because of the environment I grew up in I naturally stepped into photography? Nope. It took that moment at age 16 when I realized there were going to be no more photographs with the best man I knew in it, my dad. That moment specifically made me realize how important it is to capture all you can with the ones you love, although I love to be behind the lens I am big on capturing moments whenever and however you can. Whether that’s professionally or with whatever device you can get your hands on. By all means, I am still growing in this field but I enjoy it. I started photography professionally in 2020, I was doing everything from in-home sessions to weddings. Now, I am focusing on narrowing things down. I love learning myself as a photographer, what I prefer and need to grow in as well as being able to connect and learn from other photographers!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Has it been smooth? Well, nothing is ever butterflies and rainbows. I believe that educating yourself as well as not being afraid to accept criticism is the best way to improve. I’ve accepted so much criticism and learn from every mistake. I had a couple of sessions in the beginning of my photography journey that are the reasons why my business is the way it is. Moments I feeling like I could never get things right whether it was my prices, setups, unexpected damaged equipment – until finally I had to sit back and reevaluate somethings. Although I loved what I did, I had to consider what stage I was in on MY photography journey. (Comparison is your worst enemy by the way). Things were new and I was learning. I can say now that I’m glad it happened then because it was needed for me to refine. After speaking with other photographers and simply just conversing with individuals in business, I realized that that was just a few typical obstacles many cross.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in outdoor/scenic photography! Love finding a good outdoor location and being able to make magic! I have done weddings and events and have grown to love them, capturing those genuine reactions are always so dope! I am most proud of my creative, maternity and engagement sessions. They’ve been so unique lately! What sets me apart is that I can’t end a session with my client or myself unsatisfied. If they’re not impressed I would rather be told then and there so we can make some changes because I don’t do any extreme editing. I love things natural, I’ll get rid of the stains and the pimples but nothing extreme.
So, before we go, how can our readers or others connect or collaborate with you? How can they support you?
Anyone that would like to work with me or collaborate – just simply reach out to me on Facebook and Instagram. Let’s talk about whatever vision in mind and let’s make it happen! If I can’t then I have no problem with connecting you with someone who can. My handles are @JessKaptured! Don’t be afraid, I love collaborating with other photographers!
