Daily Inspiration: Meet Laura Hudec

Today we’d like to introduce you to Laura Hudec.

Hi Laura, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been an artist for as long as I can remember. I’ve always kept my hands busy with painting, drawing, and adding color to the world around me. But it wasn’t until I took digital art classes that I discovered graphic design as the perfect intersection of creativity and problem-solving.

I studied Visual Communications Design at Purdue University, where I built a strong foundation in design principles and storytelling through visuals. After graduating, I started my career at Overture Promotions, a promotional marketing agency in Chicago. It was fast-paced, high-energy, and the kind of place where you learn a lot very quickly. I climbed the ranks to Art Director, leading a team of six designers and learning firsthand how to manage projects, people, and tight deadlines without completely losing my sanity.

In 2020, I made a major move to North Carolina. With endless hiking trails, laid-back beaches, and warm weather, I quickly fell in love with the vibrant creative energy of the Triangle. I then accepted a job at New Park Creative, a digital marketing agency based in Hartford, Connecticut, where I refined my skills in branding, social media marketing, and website design.

Over time, I realized I wanted to do more than just design. I want to create brands that tell stories and connect with people on a local level. So, in the fall of 2024, I took the leap into freelancing. Now, I specialize in branding and logo design for small businesses, helping them craft unique identities that stand out in their industries.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I love a challenge. The road has been a rollercoaster; exciting, nerve-wracking, and full of surprises, but always worth the ride. Over time I’ve learned to trust my skills, my eye for design, and my ability to lead. Life has thrown a lot of curveballs my way in the last few years, but I’ve embraced everything as a learning opportunity.

The biggest challenge? Saying no. When you start out, it’s tempting to take every job that comes your way. But I’ve learned that the best work and the happiest clients come when I focus on projects that I’m passionate about.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in branding and logo design. Basically, giving businesses a personality that’s as bold and memorable as they are. Whether it’s a digital brand kit, printed advertisements, or an in-store mural, my goal is to create visuals that stick. I keep an eye on changing design trends, while creating brands that will stand the test of time.

What sets me apart? I bring a traditional art background into digital design, which means I create design work with an artistic eye, while incorporating research and best practices to make brands succeed. A brand isn’t just a pretty logo; it’s the way a business makes people feel. I bring a hands-on, artistic perspective into my work, which allows me to create branding that feels personal and handcrafted rather than generic or cookie-cutter. I dig into what makes each client unique and make sure that shows up in every piece of their branding. I have a strong passion for working with local businesses because I truly believe in building up the community I live in.

I’m very proud of my work with Localsaurus, a project that allowed me to collaborate with local business and creative leaders to craft a brand focused on supporting the community. I was responsible for creating the logo, branding, merchandise, website, and various print materials like flyers, handouts, and business cards. It was incredibly rewarding to contribute to a project that not only highlighted the importance of local businesses but also helped bring the community closer together through a unique, merchandise-driven initiative.

I also believe it’s crucial to consider accessibility, sustainability, and diversity in my designs. There are a lot of goals in motion when creating a brand, but it’s important to intentionally create design work that can be accessible to everyone.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Don’t underestimate the power of talking to people. Some of my best opportunities have come from random conversations at breweries, social events, or even just being active in the local community. Be present, be genuinely interested in others, and opportunities will come.

Surround yourself with people you can learn from and always ask for feedback. Make a habit of sharing your work with both designers and non-designers. Different perspectives will help you grow and make sure your message connects. If your concept doesn’t resonate with the average viewer, the design isn’t doing its job.

Keep your curiosity sharp, your feedback circle honest, and your focus on connection. Design is about reaching people, and that starts with listening.
