Today we’d like to introduce you to Doris Gonzalez.
Hi Doris, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I’ve been doing hair for about 12 years, and my journey started when I enrolled in cosmetology school while my daughter was just five months old. After graduating, I began working at a salon where I was fortunate to have an incredible mentor who helped shape my career. Eventually, I transitioned to working independently for about four years to have more flexibility for my two daughters. While the independence of a loft was great, I started to crave something more, a community. I’ve always dreamed of opening my own salon, one built on a foundation of positivity, growth, and a judgment-free culture where I could support and mentor other stylists. When I found a space in downtown Raleigh, I decided to take a leap of faith and open Mane Salon. It was incredibly challenging, especially without a business degree, as I had to teach myself everything along the way. But as we approach our one-year anniversary this May, I can confidently say it was the best decision I’ve ever made.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, but it’s been worth it. One of the biggest challenges was learning the business side of things without a formal background. I had to figure out the finances, overhead, payroll, taxes, and day-to-day operations on my own. Balancing that with being a mom and working behind the chair was a lot. There were definitely tough moments, but I’m super grateful for my family and supportive team of stylists.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a hairstylist and salon owner, and I specialize in lived-in color, blonding, and dimensional brunettes. Although I only specialize in Lived in color, at Mane we are a full-service hair salon. I’m known for really listening to my clients and making them feel comfortable, seen, and confident, whether it’s their first visit or their tenth. What I’m most proud of is building Mane Salon from the ground up and creating a space where both clients and stylists feel supported and inspired. What sets me apart is my commitment to growth and education, not just for myself, but for the stylists around me. I’ve always wanted Mane to be more than just a salon; I wanted it to be a community where creativity thrives, and egos are left at the door.
