Challenging Forces LLC was born from a bold vision: that the escalating threats of climate change—its destructive weather patterns and environmental volatility—could not only be resisted, but actively reversed through ingenuity. Founded by systems designer David Phillips, the company pioneers technologies that introduce calculated disruption into natural systems, aiming to neutralize the harmful effects of extreme weather.

At the heart of this mission is the Climate Garden—a revolutionary vertical structure that harnesses the power of photosynthesis to create atmospheric shade. By casting protective cover over the earth’s surface, Climate Gardens mitigate the dangers of excessive solar exposure, such as overheating and rapid evaporation. But their impact goes far beyond shade.

These autonomous systems are the most versatile vertical farming innovation to date. They sustain lush hanging gardens, recycle their own water, and adapt seamlessly to a variety of vertical surfaces—trees, buildings, fences, or the company’s proprietary Climate Greenhouse. This modular greenhouse supports multiple columns of plant life, enabling dense botanical growth in compact spaces. Whether installed outdoors or indoors, Climate Gardens transform underutilized areas into thriving ecosystems.

In 2024, designer and plant enthusiast Lacy Hendrix joined Challenging Forces, bringing a fresh perspective and aesthetic refinement to the Climate Garden. With a lifelong passion for rare and captivating indoor plants, Lacy recognized the product’s potential as a sculptural centerpiece for modern living spaces. Under her leadership, the company expanded into the exotic indoor plant market, offering elegant, space-saving solutions for plant lovers of all lifestyles.

Today, Challenging Forces is scaling production of its Climate Gardens and curating a collection of striking “centerpiece” plants. These innovations are available online at www.challengingforces.com, with plans to debut at local farmers markets in the near future.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Overcoming the Growing Pains of Innovation
Bringing a revolutionary idea to life is not a linear journey—and for Challenging Forces LLC, the path from concept to consumer has been anything but simple. Since 2016, the Climate Garden has undergone countless iterations—reimagined, prototyped, scaled, and refined with relentless dedication. Yet, when the product was finally ready for the market, the greatest challenge emerged: visibility.
Despite having a breakthrough innovation, we struggled to place it in front of the very people it was designed to serve. It took two long months to make our first sale. With no external funding beyond a personal investment from Rick and Mary Phillips and the founder’s own reinvested earnings, our budget was stretched thin. Every dollar went back into production—into building more vertical gardens and cultivating our unique indoor plant offerings—leaving little room for marketing or outreach.
But perseverance is beginning to bear fruit. In April, we celebrated our first online sales, and in June, we’re stepping into the community through local farmers markets. Challenging Forces is turning a pivotal corner—emerging from obscurity into a phase of growth, sustainability, and connection.
