Community Highlights: Meet Nieya Garland of Created by Ni

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nieya Garland.

Hi Nieya, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
From drawing, to painting, to spray painting NC State’s Free Expression Tunnel. I’ve always been drawn to crafty things. I was born to create. What began as a personal attempt to make a cute sweatshirt to match my sneakers, turned into a business that allows me to inspire people all over. I got so many compliments on my sweatshirt and every single time, people were surprised at my response, “thanks, I made it!” I began selling them every now and then, just using my Cricut and an iron. About 6 months later, I invested in a mini press. Soon after that, people began asking me to make shirts for their businesses. From there I invested in a bigger press. Years later, I have enhanced my brand by adding a slogan to the back, more color options, and a variety of designs.

The mission behind my brand is simple: to encourage others to walk boldly in their purpose. The designs are simple, yet unique and personal. Above all, each shirt is handmade by me, with love. Each piece allows the wearer to choose a powerful verb that reflects their purpose, displayed across the chest. On the back, in a fun, groovy font, you’ll find the words “Walk In Your Purpose.” The hand-dyed effect ensures that each shirt is one-of-a-kind. Having struggled myself with not always knowing my purpose, these shirts became a way for me to reflect, discover, and embrace my own purpose. The shirts allow me to encourage others to do the same. You’d be surprised by how many people are still unsure of their purpose. I love that I can help them find it. In addition to my “walk in your purpose” shirts, I also create other custom apparel. Whether it’s a birthday party, family reunion, business merch, or a special celebration, I work closely with customers to design shirts to make their events even more special. I love creating.

Between the brand and customs, I’m grateful to say, business has been thriving.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road, but it’s been a necessary journey full of learning experiences. I’d say the biggest hinderance along the way has been myself. I’ve struggled with doubting my abilities, facing self-imposed limitations, and navigating the ups and downs of being a creator. However, it has been a process of personal growth, overcoming challenges, and learning to trust in my abilities and potential.

It often takes a lot of encouragement from others for me to put myself out there, but every time I do, the results have been amazing. It’s a reminder that stepping out of my comfort zone is always worth it. So even though the road isn’t always smooth, I’m extremely grateful for those who constantly support and believe in me. Created by Ni specializes in creating custom, meaningful designs that empower individuals to walk boldly in their purpose. The designs are personal and impactful. What sets my brand apart is the combination of simplicity and individuality. As I mentioned above, every shirt features the wearer’s purpose, paired with the motivational message “Walk In Your Purpose” on the back. Each shirt is as unique as the person wearing it. What I’m most proud of is the way my brand encourages self-reflection and empowerment. It’s not just about the design; it’s about helping people connect with their purpose and allowing them to wear that intention proudly. I’m also proud of the how the brand inspires my younger self, little Nieya would be so proud. Beyond the clothing, I want my brand to serve as a reminder that we all have a purpose to walk in, and how that can look different for everyone. Lastly, I’m just proud of the growth, Created by Ni is bigger than just NC!

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Yes, Covid-19 taught me the importance of adaptability and resilience. Most importantly, it taught me the importance of community. The same community that is experienced through my brand.
