Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Hutton.
Hi Jennifer, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My story begins in Buffalo, NY where after graduating college with a degree in interior design and a few ‘stepping stone’ jobs, I landed a position at a well loved kitchen and bath design firm. For 8 years I built a robust book of business and worked with countless clients on projects of all sizes, styles and budgets. Between local television appearances, published articles and national awards I was in my prime doing what I loved! When my husband received the opportunity to relocate for a new job, we jumped at the chance, which came with refreshing my career in the south. Upon moving to Durham I began working a hybrid role of interior designer/project manager for Grau Building Company where for 3 years I learned much more about the construction side of my old world than ever before. I ran million dollar projects from the ground up while also working on the interior design, which provided me with the knowledge and background information to help me grow as a designer. With such a successful approach and out of a need for an expanded business, Grau Design Studio (GDS) was born. At GDS, a fully separate company from the building side, I run all aspects of my projects from design to managing the implementation, many of which are with independent contractors or other builders. In October of 2024 the GDS showroom opened to the public, a beautiful new brick and mortar space with a live kitchen, stunning displays that feel like home, and plenty of variety in design aesthetic. Now, I feel like I am back in my groove and ready to take on so much more than I thought possible!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road to where I am now had it bumps, but for the most part, traveled well. With any big life change there are struggles, and most of mind revolved around the logistics of starting over. It takes a long time to rebuild a brand (or start one from scratch) so for someone like myself who operates at a high speed, being patient while slowly building up the business was painstaking. The design and construction industry can also be quite competitive, so finding good, collaborative partners to work with took some time.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work generally revolves around remodels, though designing in tandem with clients and architects on new construction homes is always a treat, too. My background and previous work has allowed me to specialize in kitchen and bath design on my current projects though I love working on all aspects of a project. The design industry is incredibly competitive, but clients find that I set myself apart with the efficiency, broader knowledge of the building and construction processes, and my ability to think creatively about their space. Nothing is off the table as far as design goes, so I am usually able to show clients a proposal that rocks their world in the best way possible! Aside from the countless, stunning spaces I get to create, my proudest moments have revolved around the professional cohorts I’ve been a part of. In 2020 I was honored with an NKBA Thirty under 30 award, and in 2024 I earned a spot on the Triangle Business Journal 40 Under 40 list. These recognitions still feel surreal as I am surrounded by the best in the industry and to be seen as a part of such a successful group is beyond my wildest dreams.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
I wouldn’t be where I am right now without the support and encouragement of my mentors, friends and family. First and foremost I have a wonderful husband who cheers me on daily and is my biggest source of encouragement. I’ve also had the privilege of two incredible bosses, my former boss in Buffalo and my current boss in Durham, who have provided me with every opportunity I could imagine. From trusting me to grow a brand new business, to advocating for me and speaking my name in rooms even when I’m not there, to offering teaching moments and much more, the support from those I look up to has had a profound impact on my professional development.
