Check Out Amani (Baj) Johnson’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amani (Baj) Johnson.

Hi Amani (Baj), we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My personal LORE starts…

As a lifelong advocate for mental health, my journey began at a young age, shaped by my firsthand experience with the detrimental effects of mental health stigma in my community and immediate family. This ignited a strong passion in me for advocating for accessible and supportive care, as I firmly believe that everyone deserves the chance to prioritize their well-being. My perspectives as a worker, patient, and ally have been invaluable throughout this journey.

I had the privilege of working at my grandmother’s group home, Herbert Way of Living LLC in Durham, NC, which specializes in providing residential adult care for individuals with mental challenges. Each summer, I interned and honed my skills in direct care for the residents, learning essential techniques such as cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, active listening, crisis intervention, and Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI).

There was a particularly memorable experience when a client at the home became overwhelmed and began screaming, attempting to self-harm. Instead of imposing a consequence that might have escalated the situation, I chose to help her channel her overwhelming emotions productively. I took her outside for a refreshing walk, allowing her to escape the environment and redirect her energy toward appreciating the beauty of nature. This strategy proved highly effective in my work with clients.

In 2019, my role shifted from worker to patient when I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Leading up to this diagnosis, I experienced challenging symptoms like insomnia, mania, mood swings, and excessive spending. Thankfully, my background in mental health equipped me with the confidence to seek help. I was the first in my family to pursue professional behavioral health assistance.

When my parents picked me up from school, they were bewildered and felt helpless as they had never witnessed me go through such an emotional crisis. Fortunately, my internship with a Black-women-led healthcare provider, Crandell’s Enterprises, had prepared me well. The compassionate women there responded to my parents’ needs without hesitation, offering them crucial resources and support. During my treatment, doctors informed my parents that I might not return to college or become a productive member of society again. How wrong they were!

With unwavering faith, my family, and my doctors by my side, I developed a life-altering regimen that included outpatient therapy, dialectical behavior therapy, medication, a restricted diet, and lifestyle changes. Once my doctors brought me back to a baseline level of functioning, I was gradually weaned off my medications, thanks to a disciplined routine and a strong support system that kept me accountable.

In less than a year, I reapplied to college, was accepted, and earned a scholarship even greater than the one I previously had. I also worked part-time, made the Dean’s List for Fall 2020 and Spring 2022, and became a member of the prestigious Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. By embracing my experience as a patient and trusting in God’s plan for my life, I gained deeper understanding and empathy for others facing similar challenges.

The struggles of adolescence, particularly when it comes to mania, anxiety, and depression, are often overlooked in minority communities. Overcoming these challenges has motivated me to share my story and actively mentor my peers, family, and friends seeking guidance.

Currently, I work for JLL as a Social Media Ambassador, connecting through housing, while also assisting with my family’s businesses, Jenkins Affordable Homes in Durham, NC, and B’s Way of Living in Charlotte, NC.

In conclusion, my commitment to mental health advocacy and supporting others through adversity is profoundly personal. It is an incredible honor to have been guided by God on this journey to serve as I have been served. I will continue to advocate for change and work tirelessly to reshape the stigma surrounding the need for assistance during crises.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It hasn’t always been an easy journey, but as Robert Frost wisely said, “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—I took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.” This “difference” lies in my ability to advocate for myself amidst the challenges of work, family, friendships, romance, and health. I prioritize maintaining a balance that puts me at the forefront, ensuring that my well-being remains my top priority for the long haul.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am profoundly passionate about my work in the hospitality, real estate, and mental health industries. My mission is to create environments and experiences that bring joy and positivity, leaving people in a better place than where they began. One of my proudest achievements is the strong rapport and work ethic I’ve fostered within my community and network. I believe that my genuine desire to help others, along with my selflessness, truly sets me apart. My goal is to uplift those around me and contribute to their well-being.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
My views on risk are as follows: I believe that a higher level of risk often correlates with the potential for greater rewards, even if success does not equate to a linear path. Each experience contributes positively to my journey. I strive to live life unapologetically guided by accountability and Faith
