Today we’d like to introduce you to Skye Wilson.
Hi Skye, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi, I’m Skye a curl specialist here in Charlotte, NC. Originally from Miami, I was around a lot of different ethnicities, hair, and accents/languages. So much so that as a kid I didn’t know that my hair was “different” until I moved to Columbia where I looked a lot different than the majority at my school. Like most, I went through years of straightening every day to “tame” and hide my texture and curls. It wasn’t until I was 16 I found a curl specialist myself in Asheville and started my personal curl journey. Moving here in August 2024 from Columbia SC and niching in on the natural hair world has been such a refreshing and rewarding experience. Being apart of these journeys has been so beautiful. Some are young and already learning to care for their curls, moms learning how to take care of their child’s hair that’s very different than theirs, or some who have been relaxed or straightening their whole lives and are ready to fully embrace their natural selves.
Fun fact about me is one of my favorite services to do is color. Coloring your hair can be a powerful form of self-expression because it allows you to showcase your personality, creativity, and emotions in a visible and unique way. There’s so many possibilities: natural tones to enhance your look, vivids to stand out, or contrasting colors to compliment your skin tone. Ultimately, hair color is an art form that lets you tell your story without words. For me art has always been very therapeutic, when I was younger I used to paint for fun and it’s still fun- now it’s hair I’m painting.
I’m grateful for Curl Cave and more specifically Moriah’s vision for the natural hair world. A safe space to come be your true self, surrounded by other curly girls to share your struggles, support one another, and learn the best routine possible for your individual self. Working along side hardworking like minded women is a beautiful thing. My chair is waiting for you, and we would love to see you soon.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not necessarily, I think at the beginning I was attracting a lot of those who were very skeptical or worried about what it would look like straight. It took a minute to build but honestly not as long as I thought it would be. Once I started grabbing models and offering services, posting consistently, joining Facebook groups, walking around town handing out business cards, things started to grow. It’s not a easy fast appointment like a Supercuts haircut, the consultation is long and in depth about your current routine, texture, porosity, curl type, density, where your insecurities are, past beliefs such as “curly hair is childish or unprofessional” so I take my time to fully unpack all of those things and I’m grateful for my busy schedule now.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
One of the things I’m most proud of is empowering my clients and building their confidence along side them through the transformations I do, sometimes they don’t have to be huge. But energetically and physically you are releasing when you get a haircut. It’s one of the most rewarding things when I turn someone around in the mirror and see the light in their eyes. Furthermore, the genuine relationships I build with them. I hear some of the most vulnerable stories, sometimes I’m the first to know the hard news they got that week, other days I’m hearing about a new job offer, doing hair before their engagement, I’m grateful to be a safe space for that.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was very curious and creative as a child. Always asking questions and wanting to understand the why. I was the same way in cosmetology school. I was always artistic as a child, I did theatre, dance, and singing and was apart of art club as well. I always knew my career had to end up being something where I could express myself and keep moving and see different things everyday. I always loved helping people, in whatever form that I could.
